For You
You asked me to count the horizon
and though I didn’t know what I was looking for
or how long it would take,
I did.
You cried into my shoulder
pleading evermore for mercy from them
so I took you in my arms, cradled you;
I did.
You glanced through me as just a man
as I held strong with compassion
and saw back all I could.
I did.
You told truth through the blankets
I anchored you in to keep your life
from waning and your shadow away,
I did.
You wrote line upon line about nothing
but a day and I knew what I would see
as I tore letter from letter in panic-
I did.
You sent me to find lightness for a child
while you never said why, I understood
what you needed and I came back alone,
I did.
You asked for an arrow from where north wasn’t
so I searched into spirals for a place to call home
for what was left of us when it was over,
I did.
You demanded life as one only,
neglecting your soul and fitting health on a scale
and I guided you though blind as I was,
I did.
