Mumbled Memories

You keep me up,
With endless thought.
Words you said and that I had forgot.
They keep me up for awhile,
Some even make me smile.

Others pain me,
And burden me to no end.
Some minute phrases
Are indescribably important to me,
For reasons I can't comprehend.

I can't comprehend why
Your words could make me so shy.
Still, today, many months later,
You make my face flush
And my heart sink.
I wish I could put a finger over your
Imaginary lips, in my mind, while whispering hush.

I remember most dearly
The things I heard least clearly.
The sweet mumbles in between staggered breaths.
The sweet mumbles mumbled, I remember best.
I hear them! So loud! They draw my full attention.
My memories of mumbled mumbles
Are the things I hold so nearly.

No matter the torture it brings me
To so constantly these replay,
I still need to hear them
To so much as get through my day.
