Tongues of Fire

Fire consumes them all
Licking their faces like a twisted lover
Flicking at their singed hair
At first they keep smiling
And laughing

They laugh and
Laugh and laugh
But they have no idea
How hot these flames burn
Burning
Their clothes
Skin
Hearts.

Smoke rises as the tears
Begin to tumble
From pained eyes.
The edges of mouths
Once smiling in glee
Fall now
And the flames heighten.

Screaming:
"Why?"
They demand reason
Over and over
In hell's fiery pit
One by one
They perish, passing from this hell
To the next as a flicker in Death's sweet eye.

The flames still smoulder
Eager to consume
Light and joys of those who
Still refuse to see
All that the Devil has thrust before them.
All that the world has wrestled down their unsuspecting throats
