You say you cant write love songs
but as we make our way to the pub
with a dull aching thud
all I can hear in my head
is the strum,
the strum of your guitar
you say you cant write love songs
that your heart be broken beyond all
repair
but you cant see the girls, standing
here standing there,
that wish to be a part of your wondrous
flair
you say you cant write love songs
so I ask you to share,
if you can and
if you dare,
that piece of broken heart
you just
cant bare
and I offer you a chair, and follow
your gaze as you stare
and you say you cant write love songs,
and I can tell from your eyes
that everything you once believed in, keeps on walking by,
in the form of a woman, tall thin and
shy
you say you cant write love songs,
yet you have fans, who flock and crowd
around you,
quoting songs from your bands.
They drink, they chatter,
they laugh with delight,
unaware of your struggle, you're on
your fifth pint
so we go for a cigarette, we smoke in
the cold,
the din of this city's a thousand years
old,
I reach out to touch you, reach with my
hands,
I'm but that silly girl at the front of
the stands
and you say you cant write love songs
but I cant write a ballad, cant tell a
story,
piano man missed glory,
but I can with
abstract diction surely,
write a song
or two for you
you say you cant write love songs,
you say she stands three feet behind
you,
your beautiful tragedy, but alas you
cant yet see,
that with perfect syncronocity,
you're standing right in front of me
you say you cant write love songs,
you say she stands three feet behind
you?
She cant even compare to you,
and there really ain’t anything you
cant do,
and everything you should do
is marked
in the footsteps
you take towards that pint,
towards that tearful conversation you
have with a friend,
wondering when your pain is going to
end, telling them you cant write love songs,
it's an impossibility,
and I wonder when you will see,
that every little ditty I have written recently,
has been about you, baby...
but as we make our way to the pub
with a dull aching thud
all I can hear in my head
is the strum,
the strum of your guitar
you say you cant write love songs
that your heart be broken beyond all
