What May Never Be Again

He remembers when they were courting
fires red hot and bright
the things they did could warm even cold polar night

The way she seemed overflowing with vitality
with a hug, tap on the shoulder, a quick kiss
when gone for business trips how much he did miss

Found a woman who could take him places
without stepping outside of the house
roared like a lion on occasion and yet others the silent mouse

Was it the weathering away of other issues of the world
that closed in the walls around
love making no longer punctuated with the same sounds

As wealth and popularity grew with his music
they kept on climbing their career's separate hills
moments when they were together seemed void of the frills

Wanting to hold onto the bond that no longer seemed right
one day making the effort to rekindle the flame
her lips when finally in movement voiced someone else's name

Where once they meet each other in responsiveness
tender moments rule of the day
abode now bleak and confining in a myriad of ways

The death knell of the relationship
was overhearing her on the phone say
"rather be doing a corpse when he tries to play"

So I say farewell to two of my close friends
at least thinking of them as one
so few things are really eternal and their love came undone
