Midnight

Escape from home-- ditch past, skip class, and
travel to New York City on a whim
watch the future expand
without any warranty
when the future is so dim

life interrupted, a surreal state
the city streets unravel before me
while walking till feet blistered
minds bled sister in sinister abandon
a splinter of rage; dreams wet with rain
scattered, crumpled pages

Ink blots and connected dots
friend, you will be missed like tree roots
God, in a feather for the dream-catchers
we're getting away from Virginia and the body-snatchers

I was the one burdened by the proof
of a wasted youth, forgotten
and yet as the colors ran together
I wanted to stay there, I was transfixed
forever by those city street lights.
