In Her Place

You rolled over to my side,
Almost frantic at the realisation that I wasn't there
But I was there, love
I'm here
Drenched in your sweet scent of strawberries
Filled with the passionate drops of kisses you sifted in me
My small but fragile arm resting on your chest
Feeling the silently loud beat of your heart
That heart with a ruptured soul
of a thousand dead men
My head on the pillow of your arm
Scanning the very movement of your sleeping face
Noticing that smirk that comes so often when I lay here with you
Hoping it's my fault,
That I'm the cause
But dear, the name you call out is not my own
It's that of the soul yours died with,
In unison, a long time ago
