blue frost covered flower

In the full of December
I hear the pond's calling
so in spite of the cold
and the dim haze of morning
I skate out with longing
for a moment behind me

I still can remember
the tears and the falling
just seven years old
on a cold winter morning
my parents, both skating
oh, the lessons they taught me

on sharp blades of steel
I carve lines and circles
on the image that chases
and follows below me
cold, scratched and frozen
reflection of me

how I long for the springtime
and the warmth of the summer
but winter still grips me
so I skate by the hour
alone on the pond
blue frost covered flower

on sharp blades of steel
I carve lines and circles
on the image that chases
and follows below me
cold scratched and and frozen
reflection of me

how I hope for the morning
when the daylight comes sooner
and the pond's water beckons
wet and inviting
to swallow me whole
when I dive from the shore

though the cold won't surrender
nor the songbirds come calling
I still hope for the summer
while I skate by the hour
alone on the pond
blue frost covered flower
