Waiting for the rain

The sky heavy with promise
grey clouds block out the sun
grass and flowers,wilting,hot and tired
waiting for the rain to heal
the cracked and thirsty ground.
Blackbird's beak sore from searching,
worms deep and cool and safe.
Ants, busy in their sandy piles
oppose the invading starlings,
feasting on juicy grubs.
Will this promise be kept ?
We were let down last week,
clouds black and heavy, as today,
but nothing, not a drop of rain.
leave washing on the line to tempt,
the umbrella left at home
a barbeque tonight?. . . . . .
that should do the trick.
