In The Dark

choking on the lump in my throat
anxiety for the unknown
I swallow hard and try to breathe
to exhale the negativity

an audable sigh escapes my chest
accompanied by a shallow breath
a burning deep within my lungs
a growing fear of what's to come

I've never seen the dark so dark
a shade of death across my heart
the blackest black I've ever known
these shades of dark I'm being shown

no shadows cast or light to see
only darkness surrounding me
with no sense of touch smell or sight
my weakened mind I must rely

within the dark there is no escape
the ties that bind I cannot break
I must embrace the darkness here
fight through my pain and growing fear

I wonder through this endless night
lost and searching for my light
I will fight my demons where the dwell
and hope that they don't overwhelm

I cannot see tomorrow here
and forever may be growing near
and if my fight should fall in vein
then in this dark I shall remain
