And other drugs
What is it that keeps us all behind?
Why its drugs:
Our poison
To the brain or body or will or soul or bank account,
The little things that swarm us.
So whats your drug?
Puffing on a quick fag or two,
Draining beer after beer
Or maybe gin or wine
Or other daemon drink,
Smoking some wacky tobacco
Sniff snort lick chew inject,
One night stands
Or an entire orgy every week
Where sex is master
Over you and your senses
Or maybe some whip-wielding mistress is
Possibly darker still like...
Well planned kidnaps for rape
Alternatively cold killing.
Whatever one it is knaws at you and holds you back right?
So whats your drug then?
Honestly I don't care.
And just bugger off if love is your drug,
But please do reply if
Humanity is your drug and you'll make the world an addict too.

Comment if you think I've missed some drug or addiction that needs to be said. No mature content but these are just the facts of humanity in all its ugliness, though a light and hopeful note to end on.

I wanted a list of addictions or things that become a drug and are damaging. And I am just not comfortable to write off religion as a drug, somehow I just don't imagine anyone getting a high off it and getting withdrawl from it as its pretty much eternal for them.

I could agree to that a bit...but then You have the "holy rollers" such as Baptists who roll upon the floor and speak in tongue-some every Sunday- then theres the tried and true religious fervor itself...many deeply religious people have to HAVE it...or their world collapses in on itself many find new life because of it...or die for it in absolute need of the belief to be true...many fine lines to all that jazz...causes hallucinations...simply by power of the mind (or soul...or truth in the higher power...take Your pick)...I have seen many HAVE to live by it...as ABSOLUTE...because anything less ...they would crash and burn literally.

And so in some ways Religion is worse than a drug as with a drug you can at least live without it. But with Religion it becomes life. I'll let other poets bash Religion, I don't want to as I see it as a personal thing not a social thing.

:) I meant it not so much as a bash...I love much from all religions...much I dislike---man screws that up...only was stating the deepness and how it becomes lumped in with same likens as drugs-all sharing good/bad and addictions/hallucinations...I thank You Sir and was not trying to aggravate only discuss-enjoy Your mind and thoughts.

Well I didn't mean to come off so offensive either. Its just that for me Religion is less a topic for me and morea topic for others. Its like internet memes: I understand it but don't really use it or pay much attention to it when others repost it endlessly.

I think the ending is weird. Yes, I've gotten myself drunk tonight, he-he. Other than the ending, though, I'd say it's beautiful...I mean, turning a poem with such a strong tie to drugs and "drugs of choice" into a poem about making things better--though using drugs can be seen as "human"--just seems really weird. But hey, that really doesn't make it bad or anything like that. We could call it "revolutionary." But you got so completely cold and heartless before that mention of "humanity" that it just seems out of place as an ending to this piece.
By the way...from this piece I'd say you've really grown into a great writer since last I read you. I haven't read from you much lately, and I should remedy that and I will. Maybe not tonight, but I will.

In backwards! No need to read more of me as I only write rarely and try to develop further in some form whether it is as a poet or just emotionally. It is very encouraging to hear that this poem shows a development, someday I will be a poet maybe.
The coldness and despising of a drug: of a solitary addiction that keeps you going but does not hel pthe world, may be better expressed through spoken word. My point was that a 'drug' fulfills and maintains a person but does little for humanity and that capability of changing the world is supressed by personal idulgence.

ok first stanza, marvelous! and that is it right there.
as for any more drugs/addictions. i wouldn't want an encyclopedia in a poem you know... you've already made your point pretty clear... but if you still would like then there are so many things people are hooked on to. TV, colas, porn (not sex), music, pain, blood, etc etc... there are lots.
the humanity drug loses its kick bcuz not everyone feels the same. they all have one SIN they love to carry more often than the rest.

I tried to encompass porn, sex, lust and fetish as one thing and avoid swearing as I just do not like it. A list is too mechanical then. The thing is I wanted to encompass as many things that are 'drugs' without passing judgement and pointing fingers and make something black and white.
The humanity drug is little more than a calling for someone who can save the world and everyone, without religion. We all have our flaws but where is the person whose flaw is positive and that is that!?

haha... the man who thinks the world can be saved by religion is the biggest fool or the biggest hypocrite :P (personal opinion - former catholic)

Probably could save the world through religion. But either that means only one world religion, or the world being 'saved' through fire and death to cleanse it.

Thought-provoking, which is art innit, but a bit disturbing. But so is the world, very. So, well done. 'The Velvet Underground & Nico', greatest album, I think..
