Broken Lilly

A soft knock carried in by the silence reached my doorstep
Head bowed , eyes cast downward , broken and battered
One lone lily in the field stark white shinning
A blanket of darkness her only cover

Petals torn and tattered by winter’s frost
Looking up at me with the hope of spring
Strong open hands gently lifted her from the ground
Careful not to squeeze her thread bare petals

Holding her to my chest a warm ray touched her
Placing her near a window to bathe in the sunlight
She opened her mouth to drink the spring rain
My healing elixir securing her spreading roots

The scent of fresh linen rising through sanguineous musk
Deep rooted and strong….she emerged
Lifting her once again , her petals soft and firm
I held her tight, knowing....In my hands she will be protected from the storm
