Almost Forever Right Now
In a field surrounded by a very high fence
In a field that stretches beyond the horizon
Spinning in circles will show you the extent
Of how just how it outruns the horizon
I walked slowly up to the fence
I looked straight up to the sky
It was clear to me then the extent
Of how just how it was too far to climb
It had to be taller than a very large house
Stacked onto another smaller house
I walked slowly back to the center
And noticed that the grass was cut
How could a man have done this?
How could he manicure this field?
By the time you could circle the fence
All of the minced grass would have grown back
It had to be shorter than the sole of my shoes
It had to be cut shorter than the sole of my shoe
The whole way around as far as I could see
The grass was cut shorter than I knew could be true
I could barely see trees through the gaps in the fence
Way down near the horizon
The serrated line was so far I knew the extent
Oh how just how far was the horizon?
I could barely make out the tops
From the bottoms from which the roots grew
I squinted to see but then had to stop
The sun in the sky was bright’ning the view
I could see the white clouds dissipate
I was lost forever right now
I stared at the trees through the chain link fence
400 yards away the whole way around
And I was in the center
I kept looking until panic struck
I did not question the lack of a shelter
I think that is what provided my luck
Right then when panic had hit me
I noticed a very small shelter
Right in the corner of the tall chain link fence
I ran and I ran to see what it was
It looked like a very small shack
But became a dugout of sorts
As it grew closer in my vision I saw what it lacked
No windows, no vents, no flue, and no doors
It was simply a wooden box
It couldn’t be taller than an average man’s height
But could easily contain a large animal no doubt
Or maybe a container of forgotten freight
I ran and I ran the 400 yards
Until I reached the end of the fence
It was only a few yards away from the edge
Only a few yards from the chain link fence
I noticed a friend sitting on the opposite side
Between the fence and the strange wooden shed
She sat in the grass with her knees to her chest
And didn’t even notice when I came in full stride
I sat down beside her hoping for answers
But was only ignored as she stared
She must’ve been looking at the horizon
At the small line of trees surrounding the field
I gazed at the woods so very far out
Until I heard the footsteps of someone behind us
I stood up and turned to see who it was
A man stood there with his back to the shed
My back was in front of the very high fence
I could only run to that side or that side
But instead I waited for the man to speak
Then the bones in my ears went for a ride
He wore a light brown trench coat
And from under his lapel he pulled out
A very strange black metal whistle
It was shaped like a rounded off cone
With small blinking lights around the base line
And tiny speaker-like ports on the bottom
He put the round piece up to his lips
And I noticed it produced no sound
It must’ve been louder than God’s voice
It must’ve been louder than the voice of God
My friend she didn’t even take notice
Yet the sensations I felt took me to the ground
His expressionless round face and his squinty dark eyes
Did not seem to twitch as he blew in his device
I grabbed my head in agony
As he sauntered over to me helpless on the grass
He had to have known the pain he was causing
Or was my friend’s lack of pain making him wonder
If I was faking the distress I was showing?
I blacked out before I could remember
I was almost lost forever
I was almost lost right now
I was almost forever lost
Almost forever right now
