Customs

This is a recording of the opening poem from a chapbook about travels in Asia I recently released.

I was listening to some dub and just started speaking over it, captured the smiling/reminiscing tone I wanted readers to read.. ahhh but thats the joy of books, its all about the musicality the reader brings. :) New experience for a normal spoken word fella!

Customs:

We hid the movies we made on our phones as draft MMS messages so our partners wouldn’t find them.

The way we smiled in shot together was too revealing.

Your twists of lips would ever so slightly tug at my patience…
to stand up straight and leave the ICU, for good.

You went home eventually. With legs bowed and swollen,
searching for foot-holes on flat ground,
you swung about with a gait full of destination not journey.

I took my time chasing you up while you took years to come down;
we talked through lenses and microscopes till nothing was discrete.

Those who say there is no expression here, are simply illiterate to the language.
