POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Poet Introduction
Inspired by life, literature, love and music.
The Modelos are Nice and Cold
My pops always seemed to be the life of the party
A strong booming voice that could fill the room
He had a hardy laugh like he heard the funniest thing
And he could drink hard like he was in a saloon
And when the cumbias came on the speakers
He’d hit the floor and dance like nobody’s business
He’d have fun because he loved the ambiance
From birthdays and picnics all the way to Christmas
At the stadium we would sit and drink in the stands
He’d tell me stories when he used to play the game
There was a sense of mystery...

He had a hardy laugh like he heard the funniest thing
And he could drink hard like he was in a saloon
And when the cumbias came on the speakers

Ofrenda
My father’s ashes sit on my sister’s windowsill
Along with other family members overlooking the yard
And whenever I visit on festive occasions
I make sure I have a drink
With a slight nod and toast to him
In honor of his memory
So I think…
Maybe when my time comes
And my kids and grandkids put my picture out
I’d want them to remember our times
As they read some of my poetry
Giggling while reading them rhymes
Then I’ll come across the bridge
Smelling the food and hearing them laugh
And I’ll say - laugh because...

In Light Years
I have flown at a velocity unknown to man
Steering the fastest vessel amidst the stars
I felt the gravitational pull of her constellation
Then captured it through poems and memoirs
I caressed the surface of her burning suns
In colors and emotions not known to men
Then coded my verse to relish and reminisce
On my travels of a universe that has no end
I have experienced phenomenal sensations
Wayfaring through space seeing the sights
At speeds only known to a cosmic renegade
Witnessing the lights up close in the winter sky ...

One of Them
Cold shadows collected, strewn through the night
Like a dark trousseau full of mourning and grief
As the remnants of ghosts and specters past
Gather around like a den of thieves
But my eyes could not distinguish life from death
The very fabric of reality has been lost to memory
With an emptiness that seems to weigh a ton
Where the silence feels quite deafening
There, secrets are whispered in frayed threads
Fractured and broken in mnemonic tones
Lost forever in the echoes of time
Knowing I’ll become one of them
Like a dark trousseau full of mourning and grief
As the remnants of ghosts and specters past
Gather around like a den of thieves
But my eyes could not distinguish life from death
The very fabric of reality has been lost to memory
With an emptiness that seems to weigh a ton

Lost forever in the echoes of time

Still Bleeding Blue
I remember it was some time in the fall
In fourth grade
Fernando came to our school
I drew a cool poster of him in a pitching windup
There were hundreds of us out in the recess yard
He walked around and shook our hands
He was so young
That was 1984
Now he’s gone
But on game 1
The team put number 34
Right behind the pitcher’s mound
And when Freddie hit that Grand Slam
It took me back to Gibson’s 9th inning blast
I was fourteen all over again
Jumping and...

American Idle
Vote now for your favorite performer!
Or else your ballot will go up in smoke
Because the latter unlike the former
Is a serious offense and not a joke
Some like to stoke flames of hate
Then pretend and look the other way
But all this useless idling just creates
More mayhem to everyone’s dismay
Still many strive to move forward
With growth, progress, and common goals
While other’s stagger with vile words
Delusional and completely out of control
Many of us can sense a wind of change
We feel hope and...

Save Me
I dreamt that you were six years old again
Yet somehow, I knew it was a dream
Subconsciously I was aware of our current time and place
But it didn’t matter
I was going to enjoy this little journey
You took my hand
Led me to the living room with all the toys
I sat with you
I hugged you
Your little face lit
Your bright smile
You spoke to me
I was happy in all the details of your face
Your innocence
I miss you being that little
I miss you all being that small
I held back my tears
Time has...

Blue Moon
August 3rd, 2024
No I was not outside looking up at the night sky
I was in my bedroom trying put the child to sleep
But I forgot the neon lights would catch her eye
A curiosity awakened her instead of counting sheep
I tried to reason with her and spoke to her with logic
But she was more interested in the colorful lights
Then smiling at me like I was some kind of comic
Pleading with her as it was getting late into the night
And when the hue turned to my favorite color blue
She sat up and stared at them again as if in a trance ...

Retrogenesis
She taught me not to fear death
It’s just part of living
Now every time that I go and visit her
My soul hurts and heart sinks
She’s waiting to cross that bridge
Gone are the stories she used to tell
As far back as 1936
All the great details she could recall
Are now but soft flashbacks of mystery
I kiss her cheeks and forehead
Her smile and childlike eyes know who I am
The skin on her hands is paper thin
Soft and warm under blankets
Fighting the impending cold and darkness
An internal silent battle is raging ...
It’s just part of living
Now every time that I go and visit her
My soul hurts and heart sinks

...down Time
I could see every note
Every rudiment down to the last beat
Sticks bouncing smoothly on the snare
As I marked time with my feet
I remember bullets whizzing by
Amid vociferous explosions and screams
A deafening quiet for a second
When soldiers saw me running in the street
I still recall the loud thunder
When lightning hit that tree behind our home
Me, sprinting fast and scared
Feeling a chill down to my bones
But now when I run, I hear my breath
With a steady rhythm in my mind
Every pulse perfectly played ...
Every rudiment down to the last beat
Sticks bouncing smoothly on the snare
As I marked time with my feet
I remember bullets whizzing by
Amid vociferous explosions and screams
A deafening quiet for a second
When soldiers saw me running in the street
