POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Poet Introduction
I'm not sure how to describe myself as a poet. I guess I'm still figuring that out. Relationships are definitely a focal point for me - platonic, familial, and romantic.
Untitled
Your sharp tongue
Was quick
And as we stood there
Like sheriff and bandit
In a town square
With many onlookers
Silently spectating,
I tried to say
We didn’t have to handle things this way.
But you had already started
Slicing through the air
In my direction
Hoping that maybe
You’d see
Some sign of weakness in me.
What you didn’t know was
Like Medusa’s gaze
Your weapon
Turned my heart to stone
And though you were
The only one of us armed,
Locked and loaded,
Spitting out...
Was quick
And as we stood there
Like sheriff and bandit
In a town square
With many onlookers
Silently spectating,
I tried to say
We didn’t have to handle things this way.
But you had already started
Slicing through the air
In my direction
Hoping that maybe
You’d see
Some sign of weakness in me.
What you didn’t know was
Like Medusa’s gaze
Your weapon
Turned my heart to stone
And though you were
The only one of us armed,
Locked and loaded,
Spitting out...

Postscript
There isn’t much to say
About the way
You faded out of view.
P.S.:
Thinking of you hurt too much
So I duct taped my thoughts shut,
Left them in a dark cellar,
Locked the door and lost the key.
But time and truth have conspired against me
They broke down the door
Removed the tape
And set my mind free.
And though you might not remember me
As a dandelion or The Queen of France
Or the destination you traveled to
By monkey bars made of stars, I remember
Watching through the peephole...
About the way
You faded out of view.
P.S.:
Thinking of you hurt too much
So I duct taped my thoughts shut,
Left them in a dark cellar,
Locked the door and lost the key.
But time and truth have conspired against me
They broke down the door
Removed the tape
And set my mind free.
And though you might not remember me
As a dandelion or The Queen of France
Or the destination you traveled to
By monkey bars made of stars, I remember
Watching through the peephole...

Under The Rug
When someone says they like me
I do not believe them.
Instead
I am convinced that they like
the version of me in their brain
Scrubbed clean of many things
That came before them.
I keep those parts of me locked away
Safely swept under a beautiful rug
In the part of my brain furnished with doubt
It covers the floorboards of my mind.
If I keep these secrets
Maybe you will stay.
But as soon as a harsh wind blows
The rug betrays me
The monsters waft out
Like dust in the air.
And I can no longer breathe...
I do not believe them.
Instead
I am convinced that they like
the version of me in their brain
Scrubbed clean of many things
That came before them.
I keep those parts of me locked away
Safely swept under a beautiful rug
In the part of my brain furnished with doubt
It covers the floorboards of my mind.
If I keep these secrets
Maybe you will stay.
But as soon as a harsh wind blows
The rug betrays me
The monsters waft out
Like dust in the air.
And I can no longer breathe...

On the First Day
It has been six years
And I have only just
begun mourning us.
Hindsight has never been so sharp
So harsh
So crystal.
You were the last time I had
something to be proud of.
Parade you around campus
Drag you to formal events
Attend your cabarets
Beam at the new poems about me.
Every man since you
Has pricked my dandelion petals
Watched the blood drip
And, like a reflex,
Asked me if I was alright
Not really caring either way.
And I have realized
My life is now...
And I have only just
begun mourning us.
Hindsight has never been so sharp
So harsh
So crystal.
You were the last time I had
something to be proud of.
Parade you around campus

Alanna tells me
I’m like an onion.
She reassures me that it’s not
because I’m stinky
or that I make her cry.
But that she met me
with ragged motorcycle jacket skin,
faded and worn
from traveling all of these years.
Peel back the crinkling callous
And she might catch a smile.
I’ll laugh at her silly jokes.
Don matching rubber-duck onesies.
Skip through the streets hand in hand
And howl lyrics from our favorite songs
Into the night air.
Peel again
And I’ll share
My complaints of...

Wings
I saw a flock of birds today
Flying south to avoid the November chill
Not tethered by people
Or jobs
Or bills
Or taxes
They spread their nomadic wings
Soared through the Thursday morning sun
Answering the call of wanderlust
I want to be one of those birds
Unpack these rocks in my pockets
And fly to you
And beg you to clip my wings
And keep me as your own.
When you say no
And I know you will
I can fly south to avoid the chill.

Green
I am jealous
of the wind that gets to brush its hand
against the softness of your cheeks
and the stubble on your chin.
And the stars
that get to to shine for you
Twirl and sparkle and shoot through the sky
as you stare back with wonder.
And your winter coat
that wraps itself around you
to keep you warm
Storing your secrets in its pockets.
I’m jealous of your pillow
nestled against you each night
fitting perfectly with the hills and valleys
of everything that is you.
And the walls of...

Dedications
I’d like to dedicate the shoes on my feet
To every boy who felt so much missing with me
That they needed to seek more affection
between someone else’s sheets.
I hope for the strength to tie these laces
and learn to walk away from behavior I don’t deserve.
Pound the pavement so hard that the earth shakes from my steps
Jolting them out of their lovers' arms and reminding them of my face.
I’d like to dedicate my period underwear
To every boy who cared more about
The euphoric explosion from between their legs
Than the specks of blood...

Siren's Call
She licks her lips seductively when she talks
As if they were deserts
Insatiably dry
And barren of authenticity.
Like a siren’s song out at sea
Her giggles crescendo when she feels following eyes
She’s a master puppeteer
Never lying
But always pulling at all the right strings.
She has wielded her flaws into a jeweled armor
Protecting herself with a self proclaimed beauty
It’s mesmerizing enough to set down your own chainmail.
And as her Sahara lips hinge open to reveal
Infinite rows of sharp, gleaming teeth ...
As if they were deserts
Insatiably dry
And barren of authenticity.
Like a siren’s song out at sea
Her giggles crescendo when she feels following eyes
She’s a master puppeteer
Never lying
But always pulling at all the right strings.
