We Made It

Sticks and Stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.
We’ve all heard it. That rhyme. About sticks and stones.
When I was little, I took care of my mom. She was constantly wasted. Not a memory of her sober in my head. I attended several of her weddings, none of which lasted more than two months. I routinely fell asleep to the sound of yelling. Cursing. Glass breaking. Curse words thrown back and forth.
As was best for me, I was taken away from her. Placed in the home of my cousins. Loving people who barely...

Night Visitor
I lay my head down, and he visits me. He’s shadowless, he has this… glow. It’s the only light in my world of thought. But lately, it’s been dim. When I ask him about it, he claims he’s fine. He used to dance around, drawing and capturing the hearts and minds of even the darkest creatures. Now, I notice, as his light dims, it flickers. The walls? Are they slowing down? Have they stopped? Maybe they’re waiting. DARING me to walk right through the door. Ha! They’re mocking me.
Well, no, the...

Free Spirit
Every time I close my eyes, I see her. Is she me? Is she how others see me? Maybe she’s who I want to be. She’s a free spirit but too afraid to discover herself. She is set in her ways, but doesn’t even know who she really is. What does she want? What does she believe? What is her reason to wake up every morning? It could be freedom, but she feels imprisoned. Not by the world, but by her own thoughts. Her mind is a scary place. Others admire her, but inside she feels broken. Those who know her best just seem to hurt her. She has had so much pain, she doesn’t know who to trust. She’s has had...
