Lemon Tree
I have a lemon tree with two lemons.
They live at the end of my hall.
They keep each other company,
and I’ve named them Margaret and Paul.
We have become a peculiar family,
and that is plain to see.
I would never squeeze them,

The autumn air smells of smoke,
someone is heating with wood.
The dog is giddy with excitement,

In his frayed, red-plaid jacket,
Grandfather casts a smile.
The field is long and narrow,
we walk across together.
I am thin and small and slow,
I stumble often on uneven ground.
But you are patient and kind,
You wait for me, saying nothing.
The corn has been cut,
some lay...
