Life
Big and
Complex
Yet simple
And small.
The
Affairs
Of life
Now, after
Amounting to what
In the long run?
Complex
Yet simple
And small.
The
Affairs
Of life
Now, after
Amounting to what
In the long run?

FACES
The fluid faces of these little ones
Like life itself
Never ceases to amaze me.
Like mirror, so plain
One can see their spirit from it.
Pure and uncontrolled are the smiles
From there
Even the frowns
Sincere and sudden
So plain, the joys and anger.
The pretence glaring enough.
Nothing to hide.
Here they gather to play
Around my veranda chattering happily
And I behold the crystal waters
Pure and clear
I see everything beneath
Were our faces like so
No face cap or sun glasses
Could cover the
Cringes on...

Never ceases to amaze me.

AFTER THE WEDDING
Something lies somewhere
Thick and dark
Which aroma reaches all corners
Of the streets
And it is everywhere.
Once they found it out
No one could sleep again
Even the fishes in the water could not
They run and run day and night
And they die a sleepless
death.
Those who can speak
The tongue of exploitation
Shall drive jeeps and sleep in mansions
They shall attend night parties
At the villa
And be given a shed
At the factory.
But the commoners must run helter skelter.
They must not go to school
Lest they begin...

Orgasm Haiku
Pulsating cervix
Hungry labium sucking in
lineage thread of come.
Spread on a red rug
Are two consummate mortals
Savouring their sin.

NIGHT TIME
They perch on my roof top
Eaves dropping on my deep breaths
And gather at my doorposts
They whistle in the wind all night
And I know not what they are
But I know not what they are
But I know no fear
For surely
Dawn will soon be here.
They come with darkness like owls
Hooting nearby
Landing many times on my roof
And flapping their big wings
Like an unknown bird
But I know no fear.
Dawn is coming
With its own forces to reveal
The footprint of all
That paid me visits at night.
Eaves dropping on my deep breaths
And gather at my doorposts
They whistle in the wind all night
And I know not what they are
But I know not what they are
But I know no fear
For surely
Dawn will soon be here.

HEALTH CARE
The Minister is a good man
He is also very rich.
And from the grapevine,
He has a big clinic abroad
Where his fat children are
treated
For over nutrition
He cannot afford the risk
To treat them in our country’s
hospitals.
When his convoy
Of posh automobiles
Is passing through my
district
In a procession
He would wave at
The many kwashiorkoric children
Who clap and hail the
Minister of Health.
Sometimes, in good gesture,
He throws fresh minted cash
In the air for them. ...

I WISH
I wish our faces
Were like children’s
I would not have
to smile
In your face
And make face
Behind your back
And you
will not have to pretend
Not to have noticed.
Were like children’s
I would not have
to smile
In your face
And make face
Behind your back
And you
will not have to pretend
Not to have noticed.

DAURA GIRL
This is the picture
You gave me
When I was passing through
Your village near Daura
You sneaked out of your
father’s high walls
To meet the southerner
You said you would like to see the south
But your father… but your custom.
And you left me this photograph
To remember you with.
I was only looking at your face
Baffled by your native beauty
And mesmerized by your
Innocent courage
And I was just a passerby
Today at home,
Near Ikot Ekpene,
As I look at this picture
I see the eyes of a Hausa girl....

DANCERS
You danced very well at the party
With a smile on your face
You danced with such apathy
At the party
And you aroused my empathy
For you look like me
In many ways.
I smile when tears
Are falling from my eyes
And you will never see me cry
That is why they think
All is well
In the party.
You look like me
In many ways
That is why you dance
The way you do
You must be from
My part of town
Else how could you smile
With tears in your eyes…
Please pause
The Chairman is making a broadcast
He is saying...
With a smile on your face
You danced with such apathy
At the party
And you aroused my empathy
For you look like me
In many ways.
I smile when tears
