POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Wyoming
Time slides away like a ghost,
Your soundless confession suspended
In the silent seconds between
Breath and need - searing my
Soul with all the heat of communion.
Speak, breathe - make me real
And keep me human.
Strange how we can be so
Crowded by emptiness.
The sun sinks behind us
In the flaming western sky,
And the blood rush pounding in
My head leaves me dizzy
And desperate for
Rapturous numbness.
Some things are certain;
I am naked in my need of you.
We stand bound by blood and pain,
And I am laid open by...

If Darkness Could Speak
The world shifts,
Carried on a sigh through the dark.
It's too much, it's too soon -
It's all raw and broken edges,
Like crawling through broken glass.
Of course it matters - we exist.
Buzzing, itchy silence
Carries on a gentle exhale,
Flying through the empty night,
All around us like tiny diamonds
Shattered by too many breaths.
If darkness could speak -
All jagged edges smoothed over by honey -
It would speak in the quiet moments,
The brief pauses in the pulse and throb
Of our world when we are alone and together
And the...

June
Time is slow and thick -
Heat rising in waves.
Too hot to sleep, too hot to breathe.
Raise up every spirit -
The undone and the divine,
Your listing tower of faith
Righted and held firm.
Give me a whisper, give me a sigh -
Everything is higher,
Sacred and perfect
Like some kind of
Cosmic second chance.
That low hum seeping
Into every other noise,
Holy fire to burn away sins.
No room left for anything but
The sun and the moon and the silence
Stitched up between them.
Later, we won't remember
The details -
We'll...

River's Edge
Close up the wall
With our dead -
All my sins remembered
In the roughness at the
Corners of your words.
And deep in some nights,
That knife's edge sharpness
Sees us standing -
Quaking at the river's edge,
Shadows settling where
We almost were.
How many days were lost
To the cool air in the
Hollows of dark cliffs -
To the dark that
Stalks the earth by night?
Hold tight to your war,
And ride it into the breach.
With our dead -
All my sins remembered
In the roughness at the
Corners of your words.

Our March
Hour by hour, we wait -
There was a time when
I'd have called it peace.
The light shrinks and falls back,
And I can taste tanned skin
Like it's not just an idea.
You like to pretend you know
What it's like -
That strange, dry heat
Under an oppressive sun,
Wicked and perfect.
You make everything heavy.
I'll not be swayed, but we
Can do one fine thing.
Push came, and we shoved,
So contained and immediately there -
An arduous cavalry.
But this is a cold
And desperate shine.
I can see it in the way your eyes
Settle...

Snakeskin Shine
Metal crash, blood crush -
I am reborn with words.
All the breathing world
Pauses, that hitch- smooth
Rhythm greater than
The sum of sighs -
Essential grace.
Soaring - a jet plane,
A freight train -
Liquid sound at
Fever pitch.
The air is so thick
It's practically alive.
Hot and clever, it
Slides over the
Pulse and curve of
That desperate
Snakeskin shine.
Heat and press -
My solitary crime.
I am reborn with words.
All the breathing world
Pauses, that hitch- smooth
Rhythm greater than
The sum of sighs -
Essential grace.
Soaring - a jet plane,
A freight train -
Liquid sound at
Fever pitch.

Hot and clever, it
Slides over the
Pulse and curve of
That desperate
Snakeskin shine.
Heat and press -
My solitary crime.
