POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Poet Introduction
Can you call yourself a poet if you only write when the muse beckons? Sometimes I feel as if someone else is writing the words & I'm just the one putting them on paper. Schizophrenic or just plain weird?
I Did Not Kill Cupid!
I did not kill Cupid,
I swear it was not I
He really shot himself
And tumbled from the sky
His arrow bounced off you
And stuck him in the butt,
But don't be too alarmed,
It was just a little cut
Now he cannot fly,
But only limps along,
Cursing to himself
And humming crazy songs
So where the hell is Cupid?
He’s hiding out in shame
If you had shot yourself,
You’d likely do the same!
I did not kill Cupid
Don't look at little I
For even when they screw up,
Gods can never die.
I swear it was not I
He really shot himself
And tumbled from the sky
His arrow bounced off you
And stuck him in the butt,
But don't be too alarmed,
It was just a little cut
Now he cannot fly,
But only limps along,
Cursing to himself
And humming crazy songs
So where the hell is Cupid?
He’s hiding out in shame
If you had shot yourself,
You’d likely do the same!
I did not kill Cupid
Don't look at little I
For even when they screw up,
Gods can never die.

Ride On a Cloud
I want to ride on a cloud,
floating lighthearted and free
above soaring peaks and springing forests
from sea to roiling sea …
Far above the maddening refrain
of the monotonous song of life
played in endless, illusory variation
on a scratchy, worn-out phonograph.
Silence would be my only companion –
well, more or less – perhaps I’d view
the occasional eagle or hawk on the prowl,
or an impertinent honking goose!
Traveling so close to heaven,
in spirit if not in deed,
barely aware of the passing hours, ...
floating lighthearted and free
above soaring peaks and springing forests
from sea to roiling sea …
Far above the maddening refrain
of the monotonous song of life
played in endless, illusory variation
on a scratchy, worn-out phonograph.

Driving a Human Chevy
Many are fond of saying
that nothing is what it seems,
that one day I might wake up
to find life was only a dream
Maybe I’m a photon of light
traveling in a broken, rusty Chevy,
shipped prematurely from the factory
long before it was prepped & ready
Whether born a Mercedes in a third world utopia
or a Pinto in a first world slum,
We have no choice in the matter
when all is said and done
Each person I meet is a photon of light
in a one-of-a-kind human jalopy –
Like me, a few dents & dings, some...

A Reverie (my "impossible dream")
The idea is rather simple –
that everything that’s good
is given in equal measure
to each person in the world
No more loneliness or hunger,
no danger or despair
No unjust deprivation
when so many have no cares
Ah, but cynic that I am
and man always being man,
As I live and breathe today,
I know greed will always stand
Whether nature or by nurture
(a demon’s whisper in the head?),
A heart is rarely satisfied
with what it has in hand
And the arrogant will believe
they deserve more than...
that everything that’s good
is given in equal measure
to each person in the world
No more loneliness or hunger,
no danger or despair
No unjust deprivation

Ah, but cynic that I am

The Journey Home
Into the depths of a luminescent sky
Her lonely spirit floated on a never-ending sigh
The earth shrank below to a shimmering dream
A river of tears transformed to a delicate, meandering stream
Faster now she glides on a golden ray of light
Angels await her coming, their arms are opened wide
Deep inside her soul plays a long forgotten song
The melody is sad, but she knows she’s going home.
The suffering and sadness, all the pain she knew
Turn into a rainbow of multicolored hues
Her hell is just a memory, and it too now dissolves ...

Geometrical Silliness
Unless our lives were parallel,
we couldn't help but meet
The point of intersection
being more or less discrete
Our perpendicularity
is less peculiarity
than differing degrees
of latent similarity
You complement my supplement,
acute where I'm obtuse,
hypotenize my rightness
when my arcs are running loose
But alas our lines are infinite
The convergence cannot last
Our paths diverge to nothing,
the present to the past.

A Toast
Pop open a bottle and have a seat
We’ll drink a toast to time –
To forgotten mem’ries and long lost loves
that now and then cross our minds
To songs that lift our hearts, to songs
that make us shed a tear,
Songs that take us back to yesterday,
simpler life and younger years,
To heartbreak and heartache and triumph and pain
and making fools of ourselves once & again
But mostly to old friends and the stories they could tell,
who’ve stood by our side through it all.

Leap of Faith
Pulsing waves of energy surge through my body –
I close my eyes, throw caution to the wind,
and leap into the night
A thousand doves catch me in flight
& I’m borne on their gentle wings to my new home,
invisible beyond the horizon
Renegade tears trickle down my cheek
Falling into the darkness,
marking a tenuous trail to the world I leave behind
Yet a seed of strength grows inside my heart
as I resolve to stay the course I’ve set,
transforming & re-creating my broken soul
My journey of ten thousand...
I close my eyes, throw caution to the wind,
and leap into the night
A thousand doves catch me in flight
& I’m borne on their gentle wings to my new home,

Renegade tears trickle down my cheek

A Raging Fire
By what right do you steal tomorrow
from an innocent child?
Who are you to decide
that a boy should not become a man?
What planted the seed of hatred in your heart
and nurtured it to grow so strong,
so dense as to strangle your humanity?
Are you really so blind and dead inside
that you cannot see and hear the suffering
caused by the insanity of your anger?
Or do you just not care?
Remain steadfast in your arrogance;
Go on pretending the world salutes you
for having the ‘courage’ to hide behind a bullet ...

Dos Cervezas Philosophica
I wake up each morning to a world
so alien to that of my birth
I’m unsure I can even live in it,
unsure if I care to try.
How many men through the centuries
have uttered similar thoughts –
living lives of perceived futility,
each morrow a dark, cold, threatening abyss.
These ARE just thoughts, mere words –
floating clouds in the sky, blowing to & fro’;
And yet thoughts have such power, do they not,
when we take them to be the truth?
The world was never as I perceived it to be
when I was but an innocent...

The last time I saw you,
Spring was in the air;
We said our goodbyes in arrogant faith
That tomorrow would be as yesterday was.
How were we to know?
As the days stretched into weeks
and weeks grew into months,
the walls that made your home,
the doors meant to keep you safe,
turned in form, if not in name,
into a lonely prison cell.
The last time I saw you,
I see how I took for granted
(Oh how I took for granted!)
the time we spent & laughs we shared,
the comfortable silence that...

There's Never a Good Time to Say Goodbye
There's never a good time to say goodbye,
Speak as you will of the seasons of life,
Of threescore & ten, and philosophy's muse;
Ties of the heart aren't so easy to undo.
Bonds that were forged from the moment of birth,
Though challenged & tested, remain ever so firm;
And vows of love transcend the reaper's call
In obstinate rebellion 'gainst Nature herself.
There's never a good time to say goodbye;
Always one more kiss, one more contented sigh,
One more shared sunset, a chilly walk through winter snow;
Alas,...
