POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Poet Introduction
My muse is a fleeting chimera Who flits between further and nearer. Her obvious goal Is obscuring her role And not making anything clearer.
Southern Cross
At this time everyone feels lost.
An impulse from a distant star
Will come from very far away.
Although it can’t know where you are,
Finds you with a wave of information
From a remote dying constellation.
Tonight, imagine yourself curled
Between the arms of one you love.
His gentle breathing moves your hair,
His simple bicep lies above
Your bicep, as he holds you firmly tight,
To spite the nadir of your darkest night.
When morning comes you’ll wake and know
That like the star, although he’s gone,

One September Afternoon
While looking through a window onto trees,
In the glass I catch my own reflection.
Superimposed on everything I see
I become both language and inflection.
In margins on the page I play a game
Refining what I think I understand,
I cannot step outside this brutal frame
Although I try and act as though I can.
Art Pepper’s “There Won’t Be Another You”
Rewinds itself in circles round the flat,
I try to find myself a different view,
Lost notes collide, metaphors refract.

Reading Train
At seven forty three I start to move
But today my seat is facing wrong.
Although I know where I’m going to
What I see is where I’m coming from.
Behind me my future is set out
Like the pages of an unread book.
I look forward into where I’ve been
I contemplate the route that I just took.
And where are you as you start to read;
Facing me or maybe on my right?
Do you read the headlines that I show,
Or scan my just read pages with delight?
Or are you staring now at what I write
Carried by the rhythm of a train ...
But today my seat is facing wrong.
Although I know where I’m going to
What I see is where I’m coming from.
Behind me my future is set out
Like the pages of an unread book.

And where are you as you start to read;
Facing me or maybe on my right?
Do you read the headlines that I show,

Or are you staring now at what I write
Carried by the rhythm of a train ...

Valentine's Day
When you've opened your card from hallmark,
And eaten your breakfast in bed,
When you've shared out the last of the chocolates
And all the roses are dead,
When the stars in the heavens are lost to our sight
And the churches have washed away,
You will still own my heart completely
And today will be Valentine's Day.
For our love is not made out of paper
Nor cocoa, nor petals, nor light.
Our love is composed of an infinite force
Which occurs when I hold you tight.
That love will outlast any doctrine
Any hymns or...

Blood Test
Imagine, that you’re waiting with a friend,
The room is warm with chairs and magazines.
You hear some footsteps then a sort of scream,
A name is called, you answer, it’s not yours.
You stand, and walk a red line round a bend.
And suddenly you’re running down a hall,
You’ve passed the passage that you want to take
But cannot stop; There’s something in your wake
That makes you turn, you turn and nothing’s there,
You’re running and there’s nothing there at all.
You turn again, this time you turn knowing,
It is still there behind...
The room is warm with chairs and magazines.
You hear some footsteps then a sort of scream,
A name is called, you answer, it’s not yours.
You stand, and walk a red line round a bend.
And suddenly you’re running down a hall,

As So Often Happens
As so often happens day turns to night,
Life glides from one to other without seam,
We simply sense an absence of the light;
Reality attracts a bit more dream.
Our lives comprise many such transitions,
States disappear without a cogent end,
Action emanates from indecision,
Base-metal strangers transmute into friends.
One syllable of the words I’ve spoken,
Unknowing, may have made a sea-change start,
We cannot point a finger at the moment
Or separate a fragment from the heart.
Our lives are like waves upon an ocean, ...
