Love’s Rushing in…!
Traveling at 186,000 miles per second
is the light in the night from Lightning
which blasts the molecules of air apart
to create a vacuum most frightening
but it’s not heated air being pushed apart
that makes that clamorous din.
After Lightning has struck
and the vacuum collapses,
Thunder is the air rushing in.
And the X-chromosome lies waiting alive
in the female egg with grace
for the first sperm penetrating its membrane
bringing spark for a life to embrace.
If an X is first, it will be a girl.
If a Y, it’s a boy...

Something Whooshed...!
Something Whooshed…!
On a planet, in a country, in a state, in a town,
on a street where a lampost shines
and the houses, very warm, quiet dreamers in their sleep
like a hush after church bell chimes.
Something whooshed on the wind in the distance.
Something galloped in the lime moonlight
and its wings cut the air into slices of Fear
which it tossed in the night with delight.
And I shivered with a tremble and began to disassemble
with the fright now fused to my bones.
Slices landed on the rooftops, slid across...

A Deck of Cards
A Deck of Cards
There’s Chess, Checkers, Parcheesi and Bingo, Monopoly and games galore
but imbedded, ingrained in a deck of cards is immersed the wisdom of yore.
The Heart is the Animal Kingdom, the Club the Kingdom of Plants.
The Diamond reigns over the Minerals and the Spade has Metal stance.
They are elements of Fire and Air and those of Water and Earth
from the Valley of Kings on the banks of the Nile at the time of Egypt’s birth.
The King and Queen and Jack together are the Trinity we hold so dear.
Twelve like those in a deck of cards...

When Fogs Collide
When Fogs Collide
In a forest bent by breeze
blowing branches over leaves
came a thump, thump, thump in the midnight.
All gone was the starlight,
even absent was the moonlight,
when a white fog glowed silent
slipping through the trees.
I froze and stopped from smiling
‘cause my fear did find beguiling
how this eerie froth of floating grace,
ejecta from some spectral place,
could turn and twist in one ‘bout face
and send all fears colliding.
It pulsed a light and started thumping, ...

Running Rooftops
Running Rooftops
I was running over rooftops, chased by the local cops,
leaping ‘cross buildings with a ninety foot drop.
Freedom keeping blood fired, chasers getting slow, tired.
I can see the roof’s door across the gravel top.
I go through its open clear, racing down the winding stair,
jumping three and four steps in descending flight.
Sweat pouring down my face, cops still giving chase.
Air is sweet on the street escaping into night.
I run to the nearby park in the dim made of dark,
down a lane, ‘cross a path where the...

Second Chance
Second Chance
My Love slammed the door. It shut as a tomb,
like sound sucked empty from a symphony room
where no music played, where no feet light danced.
Gone was my Love, my last best chance.
300 feet per second is, I know, the speed of pain
as it travels thru the body on its way to the brain
but a breaking heart is witness to a fear coming faster
when sorrow’s Beast of impact charges reinless, without master.
My breathing’s getting deep. I seem to need more breath.
I’m fighting back the tears where they exit from...

One Good Idea
One Good Idea
Ever toss One Good Idea in the Sea of Fate
‘cause some kin or buddy said it had no weight?
When the next one came to tremble your soul,
those fingers of doubt only strangled it cold.
No diploma, certificate or college degree
was required to envision what your vision did see,
for the God within pulsed a light sublime,
that One Good Idea that was yours for the time.
It’s had civilization running after learning to walk;
babies making speeches after learning to talk,
scientists, explorers letting...

Flying Pigsfeet
Flying Pigsfeet
Ann had cooked the pigsfeet. Cat and Alice brought the steaks.
Clare arrived with veggies and Sarah’s tasty cakes.
Family members talked and laughed before we took our seats.
The house was filled with smells of food. I couldn’t wait to eat.
It was a lavish dinner on the eve of Halloween.
The table was bedecked with food. What a scrumptious scene!
We all sat down and bowed our heads while Pete said Holy Grace.
Then everyone began to eat at a wondrous tasty pace.
The steak was tender, the veggies...

In the Basement
In the Basement!
I’ve seen fear on the face of men in war,
that wide-eyed riveted gaze,
on mine in front of some foes with guns
who intended to extinguish my days.
Yet nothing could ever prepare me
for this tale I’m compelled to present
about hauling wet clothes to a dryer
downstairs in my buddy’s basement.
First the lights went out, I dropped the load.
The basement silence held two sounds,
like knives slicing air in the distance
and thudding feet walking soft ground.
I lunged for the stairway in darkness. ...

The Warrior Mice
The Warrior Mice
The orange and gold of the dark desert floor
did fade with the plummet of the Sun
-and the red heat ebbed in the twilight
-while the blue stars twinkled in the nightlight.
-When the brown sand shifted in the moonlight,
two mice did run, run, run
through a deep, deep gully of an upslant hill
over sand in the night sublime.
-Their hearts beat faster in the lost light
-from impending disaster of a fright night
-by the claws of an Owl now in mid-flight
as its wings sliced the air from behind. ...

She Danced
She Danced
Out from the mystic shadow, she stepped into the night
clothed in something shimmering that flowed with glistened light.
It stopped my breath and skipped my heart to lock my brain in place
as she walked across the dancing floor with poise and regal grace.
Houselights dimmed. Voices muted. The audience held its breath
which seemed as one eternal gasp prolonged, pulled and stretched.
I heard the finger cymbals clash and break the air with sound.
The music played. She moved a foot. A tremor pulsed the ground.
The rhythm...

Apocalypse Day
Apocalypse Day
When I opened my eyes, the day rushed in.
It was sunny and beautiful and devoid of sin.
With lawnmowers running, children’s voices played
on a breeze off the coast this weekend’s Saturday.
I waved at my neighbors, Sam, Ernie and Mack.
They busied with yard work but smiled and waved back.
I looked for my car keys. The cupboard was bare
but what was this something I sensed in the air?
An eerie, gut wrenching thickness of black…
Wait! That’s when I heard it, a lightning crack.
I raised my head. The neighbors...
