POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Tapered and Finite
Billowing skirts and scarves
As we ran, laughing, like dried leaves,
Flushed at the neck and breasts
Under woven folds that fluttered,
Breathless between our shouts
Of life, and cold wind gusts inhaled.
Then you sped us away,
Forever friends, we were certain.
As we ran, laughing, like dried leaves,
Flushed at the neck and breasts
Under woven folds that fluttered,
Breathless between our shouts
Of life, and cold wind gusts inhaled.
Then you sped us away,
Forever friends, we were certain.

BLUE
..Blue...
On a road of never ending
Blue...
I can’t see you, this fog of pain
That tears a hole right thru my brain
And letting in the cold and rain
To make me half or whole insane.
I only know inside my heart
That it’s blue... a strange hue of blue
I’ve never seen it in the sky,
I’ve never known it in the sea.
I ask myself the reason why,
All I know it’s deep within me.
And it’s blue... a strange hue of blue
I swear to God...
On a road of never ending
Blue...
I can’t see you, this fog of pain
That tears a hole right thru my brain
And letting in the cold and rain
To make me half or whole insane.
I only know inside my heart
That it’s blue... a strange hue of blue
I’ve never seen it in the sky,
I’ve never known it in the sea.
I ask myself the reason why,
All I know it’s deep within me.
And it’s blue... a strange hue of blue
I swear to God...

I could suffice for Him, I knew
I could suffice for Him, I knew
When I was but a child.
To think of Him as Father, too,
Though was He meek and mild?
The way I know is opposite
From what is meant to be.
His voice intent, mine hesitant,
This force ‘tween God and me.
Yet to suffice and not forsake,
Despite complete withdraw.
But is it more than I can make;
What comes before the Fall?
In chess of Thunder’s own device
I leave the game bereft.
In knowing Him, I could suffice
With no more pieces left.

I Know Now
I'm calm beneath the ridges of myself,
A hobo with a knapsack on a limb.
The sheltering of bridges passing o'er,
I go back on the road and walk with Him.
To feel the breezes fingering my hair,
I love connecting with the common folk.
The sounds of strings & voice attending me
As women stoke the stoves of rising smoke.
And know that He is watching from the fields,
I sit at table sharing local fare.
We reach to take each other by the hand,
To bow our heads in thanks; a simple prayer.
I take my leave to join Him...

Tributes for Emily
(Emily Dickinson)
To tend our Father's gardens,
And to taste a stamen sweet
(Is) before the weather hardens,
And to savor harvest reaped.
____
The purple stitch of amethyst,
Contrary to the Autumn moon,
Beguiles the clouds asunder,
Who succumb to swoon of thunder.
____
If tears would pause the Destinies
When thine is fated next,
Remember, Death arrives in threes,
As trill and quavered sent.

Unsent
Between the fires, rain & flood,
I tried to lay aside this pen
Because I didn't have the heart
In heated times of heated words
To let my pride begin to mend
And give us both the room to grow
I didn't think, it wasn't clear
I needed to forgive myself
But now it's far too late I know
Because the local news is on
With one more added to the toll
I prayed would not be one I loved
But now with ruins all around
I've yet to cry from bitter news
And here I sit with written words
On paper I...

Carrion
Death of any kind
Doesn't guarantee an ending.
How is it done, this
Sleight of hand, when
Desperate oaths you're sending.
I didn't know from the moment when
Carrion birds appeared, that
I would endure, their
Shadows ghosting overhead.
Always there among the entrails.
Nothing officially confirms,
No out-of-body messages.
Even for those nonbelievers,
Till after the rush of warm blood
Slips away into slumber, and later,
Daylight terrors, with their
Unblinking stare of
Disenchanted...

Las Mariposas
Many thousands of them were sent
by their families, which I always
thought of as a migration:
butterflies that didn't understand
having to make the crossing alone.
Las mariposas de Cuba were flown
across the ocean to the mainland.
"Por favor, no me hagas!"
The children might never see
their familias again.
"¿Dónde están mamá y papá?"
And when all of them had grown,
many men with children of their own,
even the most successful of them
would sit and speak of that day ...

I'm beginning to think it's You
I was up all night,
Working on a ton of files
By 4-watt moonlight.
Thought I’d only be a while
With my paper purge,
Didn’t think twice, so all right:
In bed by midnight.
But no way, ‘cos time will merge:
When one thing clones two,
Grows many from few,
Gives answers to clue,
Dyes rainbows their hue.
Taught trees all they knew.
Learns cats ways to mew,
And cows how to chew,
And doves when to coo.
How dogs use the loo.
Why we should eschew
A bridge gone...

Vacant
Just now, a mirage of sound
Heard from the wall heater
I never use.
Rain landing from above,
That's the only way I know
As precious little visits where I live.
I look out the front door
And see the vortex of raindrops.
Feel the chilled night air on my face.
Inhale deeply that chill like arctic.
Slowly, I absentmindedly
Pull my threadbare robe around me.
Easing back into my
Slightly less cold apartment,
Closing the door of drafts.

Drawing Deep The Well That Night
The smoke and ash from glowing embers
Left from a fire that raged hot that night
Was when she in her darkest thoughts had
Wrapped me in a deeper velvet, covering
A bed of lamb's wool, to be smothered
In a traditional, biblical love.
Where my paleness was the milk & honey
That laid among the goat herd with their teats
Full & dangling as I woke from their bleats.
And there she was, the warrior shepherdess
Waving the herd aside...

The High Shelf
I want to become someone else today.
And, in wishing it down from the high shelf,
Will this in fact bring out more of myself.
In my chair I rock to a slow cadence.
A mantel clock between my shoulder blades.
A timpani within a symphony.
Clever, how the first rain of fall arrives
As the introduction is preceded
By a trembling percussion of thunder.
I rise to gaze through the rain-flecked window.
But the someone else that I will become
Shall not think twice to leave & greet the storm.
And, in wishing it down from the high shelf,
Will this in fact bring out more of myself.
In my chair I rock to a slow cadence.
A mantel clock between my shoulder blades.
