POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Poet Introduction
I've always loved poetry, since I was a child, and as I grew older I started to write my own. I adore writing from scratch, but don't be surprised if you see a poem or two pop up that was sparked from a competition or prompt!
Snow and Mirrors
A blue suburban home
With Christmas lights in October
Soft, inviting, you can almost picture the family that lives there.
Sometimes you think you see them, manicuring the lawn
And kissing eachother goodbye on the doorstep.
You draw closer, trick-or-treat basket in hand.
Surely a family so pristine has a few pieces of candy to share when your own basket is so desolate?
A woman comes to the door,
Dressed in white, bright compassionate eyes.
She gives you handfuls of full-sized candy bars.

One-quarter done
On my twentieth birthday,
I had a panic attack.
On my best friends bed,
I removed my shirt and let cool air soothe my back.
When my breathing had calmed,
I then turned to my thinking:
I'm one year closer to dying
But one year closer to drinking.

Toast
When you wake up in the morning, the first thing you do is make eggs.
You stare blankly at the egg tray in the fridge wondering how many to make.
You're home alone, which is good because you only have five eggs.
Eventually, you decide and pull three eggs out of the fridge.
You're not hungry enough for four, and it would be a shame to leave a single egg in the fridge, you reason.
Two makes more sense, but then you'd feel obligated to make something to go with it- toast, perhaps.
You contemplate this as the cool fridge air...

Hechizo
Touching smooth stones
With shaking fingertips
I try my best to atone
Lest I drown in my sins
Unassuming opalite
Can only bear so much
I soak up the last of it's comfort
Then allow it to be cleansed with a touch
Of moonlight from my windowsill
Now with dry lips---
"What I have done shall
Be no longer so
I mote it be
Suelta el hechizo".

Sunshine
You are my sunshine
My fair weather bride
I made you happy
but now that's died
I'll hide my depression
For your protection
Please don't take my sunshine away
It seems that lately
You've come to hate me
Said "I can't deal with you right now"
And oh my darling
You're no Prince Charming
But that's not what I wanted anyhow
I was your moonbeam
You were my best dream
I pulled the seas
To see you smile
And I'm regretting
The tears you're shedding
They're making the seas heavier my dear

Happy
It's too easy for you to leave me when I'm crying
Shouldn't you have at least lingered by the door
But it's easier for you to let me put myself together
Even when it's you who tore
Me apart
You promise every time that you'll be better
You promise every time that you'll improve
But the only thing that I see
Is momentary
Guilt,
So what's the use?
I tell myself I'm done trying
To bring our problems to your door
If it's so easy for you
To act like there's no work to do
Then I guess I can deal if it keeps you happy.

"Lucky Number Seven"
One week between our birthdays.
Two gifts, one in my palm and the other in your casket, awaiting you (although you will never come).
Three days after burying my adolescence, we buried my grandmother.
Four days after that, her birthday came.
Five children she had (two of which will greet her),
Six months where we truly bonded
Seven days since the funeral.

On
the last day, I had hoped to find an ending, a perfect
truth. but instead, I found myself doubting
everything more. I'm inclined to believe
that everyone lies.
It's both an intereating view and a bitter one.
*formatting is purposely odd to help preserve the unique style of a blackout poem in text, although it's not very effective. This poem was derived from an essay I wrote a year or so ago, so there are no credits to be given.

Him, a Reflection.
H i m

He rapidly drew my interest. From the
moment I see D, I know he
demands to be given a chance.
He's a troublemaker (although the trouble he's causing
is a fuss), and I sense this immediately.
Despite potential problems he may cause, I like him anyway.
I believe h im,
regardless of how problematic that
i s. His outspoken
nature not only did not cost him, but was arguably what secured it for him.
I saw the fire he was portraying.

Unfathomable Stupidity
I will always doubt your words
But in the end let you say them
After all,
Who else is, dear?
And they're words I'm desperate to hear.
I may not have closed that door all the way
Because I can still hear the door creak every time you draw near.
Why did I let this happen?
But in the end let you say them
After all,
Who else is, dear?
And they're words I'm desperate to hear.
I may not have closed that door all the way
Because I can still hear the door creak every time you draw near.
Why did I let this happen?

To grandmother, about grandfather.
I dress
Brush my hair
The normal things.
Only
I put on a ring
Now mine to keep.
That's how it goes when it's left behind.
Left
Like me
Both of us without you.
Only I doubt that it hurts like I do.
Your ring both saddens and strengthens
As I walk through the doors.
Of a funeral home.
Not to say goodbye to you, I've done that years ago.
But to one of the other person you left.
A husband.
My grandfather.
And I feel numb.
Have for the past week.
But as I have only an hour before the calling hours begin, anxiety...
