POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Poet Introduction
Turbulent waters ahead, sharks behind, shut up and paddle...
Numbness, Come
Dazed.
My thoughts are shouting,
But so far away now.
I frown
At the car keys.
Where to?
I stare, unseeing, at the dashboard.
The muted rushing in my ears
Is getting louder.
There is not much time until
Impractical sobs
Tear their way out.
So, come, numbness.
Say nothing to me
For a while longer.
My thoughts are shouting,
But so far away now.
I frown
At the car keys.
Where to?
I stare, unseeing, at the dashboard.
The muted rushing in my ears
Is getting louder.
There is not much time until
Impractical sobs
Tear their way out.
So, come, numbness.
Say nothing to me
For a while longer.

Monstrosity
First, it shatters your peace,
Which you might not have realized
You still had.
A fierce stab with an ice shard follows,
Making you a macabre gift of
Terror. More gifts will come.
It feeds. It feeds and grows.
Dismay and confusion are presented
In a black bag, leaking.
It slyly inches your time away,
Minutes, hours, days
And months.
It wants and it takes
Your dignity overtly now,
With every hair you lose.
“More!” it roars,
And drinks your strength
And slams your hope.
You give blood, take...

Keening of the Quintessence
I see you, my tender one.
I hear your pulse and I yearn.
Light surrounds your every word,
I watch your lips, mesmerized.
A thousand years are forgotten,
As I spend eternity in your smile.
I succumb to sturdy arms,
Drink in the sweet caresses.
Oh, my shriveled soul stirs
And my deadened heart jolts!
I fear a kiss will be my undoing,
A stumble to a love’s abomination.
You are unaware, and pure.
I bring damnation and black blood.
One last...

Downtrodden Day
(Winner of "Show Your Sole" competition)
Cracks in the pavement,
Black spots of old gum.
Red bricks of a drive way,
Mud in the corner of the lawn.
Front door step,
A pause by peeling paint.
A clack and a shuffle.
Back down to the pavement.
Along some low shrubs
Crazing paving, dark in the rain.
Passing an empty flower bed.
Who left a skipping rope here?
Another clack.
A thump of a big envelope
Landing inches away,
On the other side of the door.
Strides become yards,
Yards become...

Sugar Fix
Teasing and amusing me, with
Fun and charm, banter and wit,
You were my sugar fix.
Your kindness and
Heart-dropping smile,
Fed my luscious high.
As the minutes glittered by,
Hours of talk and bliss, I was
Hooked on my sugar fix.
Then you left.
Withdrew the rush
As I faced withdrawal.
Inadequate substitutions,
Tremors and sweats,
Where is my sugar fix?
I recall our chats,
Tilt the jeweled words,
And catch the light.
Crystallize my core, please
Give me one more hit.
Be my sugar fix.

Delusions from the Other Side
Both bruised and battered,
Living and striving.
Trying to understand, then
By omission, lying.
A choice, his choice,
Her choice and the way
Not taken beckons and
It is a clear space.
Look at this path, smooth and
Through a sweet meadow.
See the beach and beyond –
Why, it’s a fucking rainbow.
Take off the pink-tinted
Glasses and conjectures.
Around the next bend are
Big rocks and vultures.
So maybe we stop here
Awhile and lie with the snakes.
A human privilege is
To choose our own mistakes.
Living and striving.

By omission, lying.

Wræc
Roiling, thick black tar
Stews and bubbles,
Its bitter taste cloying
And flavoring the last days.
The crone of condemnation
Plots with the ogre of outrage.
Now the once-elusive victory
Falls within their gnarled reach.
The tender heir of bliss and
Delight is the target of their
Design and savage glee.
And I allow it.
The glumps of mucid poison
Pour forth, leaching and stifling.
The light muddies and
My air extinguishes.
The murk of apathy,
Leaves me entombed,
Still and cold. What matter
That end...

Merciless Burden
You loom over me,
Broken wings trailing
Ash and scree
Your grim calling card
You think nothing
Is the answer
Destruction without
And within your core
Fool that I am,
Your image is glamorized
But fortunately I
Never trusted allure
Stumbling through rubble
I twist haltingly,
Tattered tears dusting
Empty door frames,
I feed your gaping maw
With the rawness
Of my defeat
Bloody and torn
I have stopped
Longing for the white
Fiery sword of hope
Best not illuminate these horrors...

Countryside amusements
a boundless sky,
rolling fields,
cows and sheep scattered here and there
bright and calm,
fluffy clouds
a tractor droning two farms away
“too busy here,
let’s move on.”
a smudge of wild grass,
heather crawling,
a lone tree hunched in a mismatched marriage to the wind
“perfect.
let’s hover.”
one figure strides
between village and vale
strong and purposeful pace, but alas speed is relative
a bright light,
unearthly suspension,
the figure vanishes
he will return with nothing
but a...

Surviving Life
It rushes forwards,
Swallowing.
You can
stand fast and hold,
unswerving rock,
worn smooth
and worn through.
You can
bend with the reeds,
grounded here
but swayed there.
You can
tumble and spin,
a fallen leaf, lost,
swirled by the eddies.
I liquesce
and flow,
the river drinks me.

Home is Lost
Home is lost, faded, gone.
I’m a perpetual guest, polite and alone
Old bonds tighten, secure and strong.
How I’d sought them, forged them,
fiercely shunning uncertainty.
The castle is now a keep,
with no key.
A window looks out to sea,
beckoning and holding
treasures unknown.
I’m a perpetual guest, polite and alone
Old bonds tighten, secure and strong.
How I’d sought them, forged them,
fiercely shunning uncertainty.
The castle is now a keep,

Sea Mother
I go for solace,
to descry the infinity.
She dresses herself
in a myriad of robes,
glittering gold of balmy airs,
frothing whites of exhilaration
or rolling grey rumbles
defiant of murderous gales.
Below the surface,
where the liquid lull nourishes,
her heart pulses
ceaselessly.
I immerse myself
in her infinite embrace.
I forgive the salty assail,
forging persistent tendrils of memory.
Months later,
stranded on the shore,
I cling to the whispers past,
reluctant to suffer her icy clinch....
to descry the infinity.
