POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Poet Introduction
I'm just a soul, hooked on magic & poetry sandwiches. My words are fools, dancing as they flirt with the life you give them... & then there's the naughty stuff that wakes me in the middle of the night... one day all that cheese'll kill me.
Confessions of a Lazy Poet ( part 3)
Only today it struck
(u-friggin-reeker)
poetry – the big P
can be an excuse for anything I want.
Assignment late for college
sorry, it was the poetry
Christmas shopping not started
it was the poetry
that unfortunate late night incident in the parking lot
Sorry, officer I was just grappling
with this couplet alliteration,
I was writing poetry you see.
All through my weekly meditation class
I was pursued by verse
half finished stanzas
galloping manically round my brain
frenzied mustangs of rhyme...

Diamonds Hiding
People crossing frontiers
working for a living
trying to take a fast buck
dying to make a killing
Ellie's got pockets
sewn into her coat
places you'd never know
and Danny spends nites
rough riding his boat
for the tough guys
stashing in the limo
Everyone's a gambler
for money or love
it's a sin like nobody knows
chasing after rainbows
when the stakes are high enough
trying to hide a diamond in the shadows
Danny started running
at six years old
the one life he's ever led ...

Health Warning
times
I think I'm not fit
to deal with all this bullshit
life
spatters in my face
as welcome as a nose bleed
feel that it's feeding on me
why wont it go away
Ever since tomorrow
became bigger than today
life is not worth living
underneath the pain
They said
things would be OK
they said
it would be
happy ever after
if I
did what they said
and lived how they said
just a crowd of dirty
lying moralisers
going nowhere
what I swallowed
tastes so bitter ...

No Alternative
Three strokes of the knife
could you kill
take a life.
I don't mean self defence
I mean your survival or mine
eat me
or die.
I am not a fish
I am warm
with a heart
that beats
just like yours.
Would you drain my blood
and drink it
to sate your thirst.
Are you man
or mouse.
What are you?
could you kill
take a life.
I don't mean self defence
I mean your survival or mine

Angels from Tibet and Ireland
On the beach at Varkala
December sun warming my bones
I looked up at the cliffs
all full of little Tibet now
shopkeepers waiting patiently
hoping to overpower the few visitors
with their trite tourist offerings
Last night it had been a young Tibetan
who had saved me on his way home
when death came calling
an inch away
on the other side of an invisible rope
In the dark there was no hint
from the high, narrow crumbling path
which had become almost as familiar
as those twice nightly power...

Tools of the Trade
Look up,
and you can't cry
look down
see how dark it's gone
these are
the tools of the trade
Changing state is second nature
you can always swop your game
be someone new
with the the tools of the trade
And if you wonder
about the weather
when it's raining in your head
don't reach for your umbrella
just put sunshine there instead
It's easy with
the tools of the trade
Twist your gut with reasoning
call it magic without pain
all you need to do
is blink and then reframe ...

She Said No
No's a little word
that can hurt so much
and when you're down on one knee
it's a long way up
Those bluebirds
so bright in my imagination
flew suddenly away with you
and the orchestra
playing in my heart since day one
filed out hurriedly
to a flurry of bum notes
The perfect rose
I bought for you
hugs the carpet grimly
its scent the cruelest poison
in bitterest defeat
spent and crumpled like me
one eye firmly
on the trash
My exit feels like slowmo
the throng...

Notes for the journey on auto correct
So un-American of you
my precious cupcake
disappointing stale bagel
Hair reappearing
back through skin
How long
did you grow
like Good King Henry
Miss Guided-Reasoning
so fresh in store
and bought just yesterday
And what's that
hiding
in your tummy button
Where have these scissors been
Who's got the instructions
Don't say you've
cut them up
again
Are we nearly there yet? ...

I drove all these miles
in search of the long hair that grew from your nose
the one you couldn't see
that you'd left for me to notice.
You wore that special tie
the one I like
with that special knot
tied extra tight.
And you didn't care if it was day or night
when I arrived
you'd left on the light
to celebrate my crossing the porch.
Had I been there for you
I would have swept the leaves
but they've blown away
now all that's left
is your naked tree
don't let it
fall yet... please.

Secrets
You were my demonology
it started all in my head
and you fell for it
craving a state
that sucked you in
and grew faerie wings
to fly any place
from where we were then.
On the halfway bridge
we heard the crackling
new electricity
sparks of our wishfulness
but never dreamt
fresh desperation waited.
And up the hill in that abandoned house
you left the baby sleeping
lying nights with the drug of me
to softly burn bad memories
as I blamed moonlit waves
tumbling.

First in Line
Friggin blue blood
straight laced
old school
I can't handle
all those jewels
so
po faced
undeserving
I don't need you
stuff the knighthood
up your jacksie
don't tell me
it's for queen and country
who needs cuntries anyway
you wont make one
outta me
even tho
you got me young
I'll be
first in line
for revolution
I'll keep
clawing
madly
at your statue
till its down
and you quit
sucking
all our nipples dry.

Confessions of a Lazy Poet (part 2)
Weight-watchers take note
I have proof
that writing poems makes you thinner.
I have never bought a belt in my life
but today after thirty something poems to date
(shit I've lost count)
I can barely keep these jeans up
which may create some
interesting future material.
Not even that naughty pork pie
can cut the mustard right now
as I always seem to have
other more pressing appetite.
Finally organized
my notebook in the shower
plastic covered
shiny and new but still unused.
Insurance...
