POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Poet Introduction
I'm just a soul, hooked on magic & poetry sandwiches. My words are fools, dancing as they flirt with the life you give them... & then there's the naughty stuff that wakes me in the middle of the night... one day all that cheese'll kill me.
Invisible
My soul senses Spring air at the window
I hear fresh birdsong on the breeze
but now my life is all blisters and ramps
and I must accept that the steepest of hills
will always remain beyond my reach
There are fresh ruts in the carpet
where I sat for hours
face pressed hard
to the cold pain of my dawning truth
It never gets easier to accept
and all those inspirational Olympic heroes
are quickly forgotten
each time I am singled out
for 'special' treatment
cossetted and clucked at in...

Here they are again
burrowing into my brain
as grateful as eels for warm mud
while my fingers feed on the electric thrill
of watching the words appear
Earliest morning is the best time
but the dry mouth and sticky eyes
must wait
a few stretches of my forehead
will vanquish both
my heavy tongued blinking
vanishing with the night.
I receive.

Viruses
We have lots of viruses
in this world
there's swine flu, bird flu,
the I love you worm, AIDS
and influenza to name just a few
But there's another kind of virus
that's much worse
the viruses that affect people's minds
which can break out anywhere or anytime
like wearing your hat back to front
or cutting the knees out of your jeans
and no-one can remember how it started
or why.
There's a game called soccer
with twenty two men chasing a ball
and millions of people
spend a long time watching
when...

Endless Highway
This is the song for truckers
on the endless highway
with our world on wheels
we can drive all night
a song for truckers
to bring luck on the journey
while we tune in on the music
and let the miles roll by
Don't matter what rig you're using
when you hear that motor gunning
'scuse me Momma I'm passing
'cause we're loaded up and running
yeah, it's the song for truckers
on that endless highway
buckle up for overdrive
and let's roll all night.

God's a Property Developer
From when I grew knee high
I knelt by the end of my bed
and said my prayers before I said goodnight.
No, I don't think I ever missed one time
because they made certain to tell me
I would burn in hell if I did.
I was almost nine when my Grandpa died
and I asked everyone if they knew why
God had let this happen
but no-one could say
and God wouldn't tell me either.
Then much later
because the important things in life
can take a while to work out,
after a lot of figuring
I understood what God was really...

I the Bully
Lick my shit from the toilet bowl
I
will make sure you swallow
every little bit
twice
and if you ever breathe a word
I
will carve my name in big
red letters
right across your scrawny ass
because you are just a fuck monkey
living in my zoo
and
I
don't like the way you look
you've read too many books
and you're too good
at sucking up
to teacher
well, now suck on this
I
will see you tomorrow
and remember
I
have
my angry eye
is always
on you.

A Little Speck of Agoraphobia
I'm feeling the green half smile
twist across my face
An admission of guilt
that I'm hurting for no reason
which I know
is the worst reason of all
My automatic thinking
trusts pilotless is best
There'll be no
rocks in the path this time
save those I may cast there
myself
Paint peels wistfully on the door
and two weeks is long enough
without fingers to disturb
the cheap brass handle
festering glumly
growing greener than my smile ...

Holistic
It's the same the world over
take a hole and three men
one digs
two discuss the hole
and when they have exhausted
that topic
they discuss the quality
of the third man's digging
while his head
disappears.
They always eat lunch
standing up
just in case
they miss anything.
When it's deep enough
the hole
will be filled in
by all three.
That was
an easy job.

Hobnobs with Camembert
I have decided to adopt
the Japanese way of death.
There may not be enough time
to convince myself
that I will be glad
to celebrate my own departure
but I feel obliged
to have a stab at it
although to dispel any confusion
I don't mean stab in the literal sense.
The calculation of life lived
and life left
can crop up suddenly and savagely
like a wasp at the window
chasing jam
inside a well hidden jar.
That's settled,
no blurted tearful goodbyes
from me then
and no black ties please ...

Frost
Jack is back
lewd indiscriminate fingers
everywhere
like a drunken lout
lurching his icy hooligan way home
New crunchy
with the chill smile
of refound freedom
marking all those frozen frontiers
as his own
He knows
it's his territory
and for now there's no retreat
but he always was
bigger than dinosaurs
and in winter
as brave as time

everywhere

Enough
There's no lost lullaby
sad enough
for all these tears I cry
and no page big enough
to count my tears
There's no sky
wide enough
to fill my emptiness
that aches so much
through all these years
But if I'm
brave enough
I might get by enough
if I have faith enough
to tame my fears
Though in the
morning light
beyond the darkest night
I know these lines I write
wont bring you near
There's no lost lullaby
quite sad enough
for all these tears I cry
and no...

Confessions of a Lazy Poet (part 4)
I respectfully advise all poets
to drastically reduce their
daily salt intake some time
before an impending full moon
in fact some considerable time beforehand
in my own case
otherwise I may find myself in all sorts of trouble
and not just with Open Office's
spell-check suggestions either.
You may remember my brush
with the little green aliens in part 3
They've really been screwing me over.
I am just overflowing with emotions
and you realise you're challenged when
you type your user name as your password four...
