Poetry Contest

write as if you were the last survivor of the apocalypse
http://patdollard.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/cloverfield-statue-of-liberty.jpg

I've been wanting to do this comp. for a long while. My daughter and I are both post-apocalyptic junkies... The first link is to a short film called Death as a Gift (it was added to the end of I am Legend with Will Smith). The second link is to a teaser trailer to the video game Fallout 3, which always kind of haunted me with that eerie beauty of the uncanny silence of a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Anyways, I'm sure a lot of you have seen them. Just pen me any kind of reaction you get from either one (or both).

- No rules
- Collabs are fine (going to try my hand at them)
- I'd prefer serious pieces but if you're inclined to comic relief that's cool, too

Rising Among the Debris

http://cs425930.vk.me/v425930615/82f8/-tEeeO8XzG0.jpg

the soil is scorched and bleak
horizon a mere charcoal hue
a shadow of a figure approaches
walking slowly towards the base
should i say the skeletal remains
ravaged steel, melted block
a woman covered in soot
shakes debris from her black locks

would you surrender?

     "Death in the skies,
             decorated by bloody clouds.
Finally humanity has reached the brink.
I stand alone, eaten by the sudden loneliness,
on top of a mountain of bodies,
crunching dried bones beneath my feet,
                wishing,
                praying,
          is this the end indeed?"

rummaging through remains
military surplus of goods
finding canteens filled with water
some protein bars, and matches
buried beneath the ground
ammo and guns
fatigues to cover your body
and shield you from the atmosphere

could you survive?

"The rubble that sounds so loud
         in the demolished quietness
             in the silence,
of the ruins that once was.
     Not a soul in sight,
          all mortal life form vanished,
a disappearing act of grand proportions.
deserving of a round of applause."

would you crumble in doubt?

restless this urge of suicide
with no conversation
no human touch, or interaction
just loneliness swelling inside
soon darkness will fall
must bundle up for the night
where at least in dreams
precious images bring warmth

do you have the will?

"Reminiscing on mankind,
in the darkness, my sanity snaps.
     The nothingness of the situation,
            causing a relapse,
Filling the gaps with your voice.
 Don't leave my memories,
lest I drown in this isolation.
            basking in the desolate annihilation
      of an entire nation.
Your bones of which have turned to ash,
       times that were,
           are gone in a flash,
       Trapped,
 among humanity's scraps
           time lapses to nothing."

could you summon the strength?

nightmares filled with crying
loved ones vanish into oblivion
faint pieces of humanity
carried off by the wind
memories of living life
captured in a locket
the family that once was
hangs around her neck
choosing life over death
for the unborn child
that resides in her womb
for the light of hope

she carries on..
she carries on..

"Oh so bleak is a future,
with just one mortal body on a destroyed planet,
              giving birth to innocence,
        a fetus of hope.
A small thread that could help me to cope,
         with the loss of everything,
               an apocalyptic beginning,
    A developing affection,
a vision for a new world.
It shall take one, among death and devastation,
               famine and drought,
         I will carry on."

She will never give into doubt!

Surviving The Dark Sun

I ain't gotta lose my breath
it ain't nothing but death
I ain't taking no steps
it ain't nothing but death
living at the end of a world
dreaming up a new one
no survivors in this disaster
no servants no slaves no master
evolution is still renewing
but before this dark sun sets
there are still things I need
to be improving
but who cares about my faults in character
ain't nobody to offend
every body dead
the sun don't set right
it blinks before it bows to the night
I'm the last of my kind
death is the last thing on my mind
surviving is all that I can do

Caught up; getting down
Condemned, then
The Beheading
Part of the scourge
The current Armageddon
The World’s B.S.
Didn’t happen all sudden
Madmen, these Jokesters
Mankind’s cousin

Devils been lopping off heads for years
ISIS, ISIL...Least of my fears
Four and a half ‘Nam tours
A collection of ears
Nike running shoes
Now stream Boston tears

Can’t forget
That old smallpox blanket
Scale of one-to-10
Ask the Natives how they rank it
Forget what you heard about a
New York trinket
Foreign Law, alcohol
Devils, they mixed it

Cousin always had those
Killer-type ways
You think not?
You’re living in a daze
Before Seal-Teams,
Those Drone strike screams
Most efforts made
Not always
what they seemed

Maybe make an effort
Review what’s true
Sanctimonious Lies
Only bitter-up the stew
This is something
I’ve given it some thought
Apocalypse Now is what we’ve
All might’ve wrought

-Worst Case Scenario-

Worst case scenario, I end up alive
It's not that I don't enjoy living
I just don't get it
the meaning of a breath
At least I know death
Is certain
and that's comforting
that I'll die someday
it's guaranteed
I don't have to guess
day to day

unlike living

which is the worst case scenario

ALONE

I am alone
in a world
that was torn down
by those who built it up.

I am alone
in a world
that was destroyed
by those who swore to protect it.

I am alone
in night is now a dark place
with nothing left but danger.
Not even a street light is left
to guide me around this twisted, mangled wreck
that was once our world.

I am alone
but I am not weak.
I will not cry
for there is nobody left to comfort me.
I will not cry
for there is nobody left to protect me.

I am alone
but I am not weak.
I will not cower is the corner
I will not fall into despair
for I am alone
but I am not weak.

I am alone
As the sun rises
and glistens off the dew that has settled
on the bodies of the dead
and the rubble of the world.

I am alone
in a world
that was torn down
by those who built it up.
I will not cry
I will not cower
I will not give up.

I am alone
but I am not weak.
