cradlesong

"The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world.”
—William Ross Wallace (1865)

i
a gentle hand
a mighty wand
to lullaby
wings that shall fly
from cradle bed
nippled and fed:
here grows the child
too soon reviled.

ii
a mother's hand
a sovereign land
holds in its grasp
as she would clasp
an infant's head
whose a-to-zed
makes wise the tongue
as yet unsung.

iii
a careless hand
a fearsome brand
makes of the clay
locked in its fray;
a crooked touch
hews fast a crutch
on which shall limp
a future wimp.

iv
lest this green earth
should suffer dearth
cleaving a path
of grief and wrath:
release your clutch
if by so much
you may recant
that bitter slant!

v
your cradle seed:
is it a weed
that, once released,
becomes the beast?
is it of hope
for those who grope
in darkness? might
the blind see light?

March 21st

March 21st: the first day of spring
The bitter cold of winter's embrace finally melts away
Earth's inhabitants let out a sigh of relief
As the once frozen buds begin to bloom.

March 21st: the day of the ram's birth
Her cries echo loudly as the breeze passes along the sweet scent of nectar
The sun is shining bright and the birds are chirping
Even so small, the ram's presence is strong.

Little ram head dives into all of life's struggles
Emerging victorious every time
Her aura commands respect and attention
She's a naturally born leader.

Little ram is quick to react, yet easily forgives
She's unmoving and stubborn, but also kind and loving
She holds loyalty above all else
And values family and friendships dearly.

Now she's a big ram
Completely confident in herself and her abilities
She guides me through life based off of her experiences
Her internal fire lights up my night sky.

The headstrong ram is gentle and patient
As she coaxes me, the shy crab, out of my shell
To experience life at its fullest
And to never be bitter or cold.

Mighty Ares is a strong and just leader
But also a dedicated mother
Her love and protection both shield and reassure me
Of my self worth.

A Mother's Love

While a war was brewing in the near horizon
She made the most difficult decision of her life
Leave a young child behind to make a path
Risking it all by making such a sacrifice

And when the war began there was bloodshed
There was a great diaspora of my peoples
As my mother toiled I can only imagine the worry
Hell on earth had arrived while she was far away

See, as the war was waged in those early days
Many mothers left their homeland seeking asylum
They went in search of a future and opportunity
Then to reunite the family in a safer place

While the war was being fought in different fronts
Some mothers lost their children to the violence
Some children lost their mothers in the warfare
And my mother worked hard to get me out of there

As the war continued a mother’s love never gave up
Some stayed behind sending their children away
Praying, hoping against all odds that this cruel world
Would not harm their babies
Especially for those who stayed

A mother’s love is unfathomable
It is the connection of life in the universe
It crosses the vastness of time and distance
Because no matter what war is fought
A mother’s love is the strongest bond in human existence
.
.
.
.
Shout out to my grandma as well
She was there to protect me from the hell
Because during in the war of those days in the past
My abuelita was badass
