Poetry Contest

write a poem or text based on the song

Here it is again , another song lyric competition!

The latest Wardruna song Himinndotter tells about the connection between the land and our ancestors, in this case ancestors are the ancestors of place, of the land and in a more spiritual matter. In relationship to trees, earth, the sky, as for the bear references it might be related to early times where the bear was seen as a mystical being. In parts of Siberian and  Shamanic Sami belief the bear takes a special seat both for its fierce nature, as protector of the forests, as a celestial being, as an ancestor.

lyrics in English

Sky-Daughter
Bear-sister, bear-brother
I'm searching steadily, finding only tracks
The forest's chieftain-seat is abandoned
The forest's mother chased away
The pathless forest of the mind
Pulled me deep within
Surrounded by aging trees of memory
You are always near

Sky-daughter!
My sister in the forest
Show me where I'll find, where it grows
Show me who I was and am

Birna

Show me who I wast
When you hunted freely
Before the forests disappeared
Before the river was tamed
And mankind changed its mind
Tell me what you were called before
When the night-sky was your home

Sky-daughter!
My sister in the forest
Hold my hand, let us wander
Step by step through
Darkness and light

Dear sister
Will you come back home?
Without breath
Life is short
The forest is bound to die
Without its shepards

filmed in Rondane national park, the landscape has been written about by
Henrik Ibsen in 1867

Act 2, Scene lV
(Among the Ronde mountains. Sunset. Shining snowpeaks all around.
Peer Gynt enters, dizzy and bewildered.)
Peer
Tower over tower arises!
Hei, what a glittering gate!
Stand! Will you stand! It's drifting
further and further away!

The Totem

I’ve tread a thousand miles
unfaltering,
narrating my passage
in bleak riddles
where the wildwood resin is agleam
but there’s a thicket across my tremble
where tangles bind my hands
strangles my tone
smothering bone
The wrath of the labyrinthine
sullies the flow of thought
choking my spirit
in the midst of a tempest of perplexity
Though, in its visceral misbehaving, stood I—
the thistle
with a bend in my spine
where there’s potency in abscess

Keepers of the torrent
Feed me a resilience
that’s fibrous and sinewy
Serve me grit or serve me wine
make a totem of my backbone

My fingers have fortitude
as I tug at the thicket
Before the rigidity entombs
freeing the burden of lost tenor
O’er mountains, I’m expressed
O’er the order, I’m obtained
As prowess lay, unchained
warm freedom
with subtle distractions

Mother of meddle
guide my wander, let me breathe
lashes over ashes
Where there’s plunder in plight

Pardon, mother
Wherefore might I roam?
To break falter?
To wake the altar?
The path is misty
without the silk of your hand

"Waldvater und  Aschekrieger"

Talons of hawk's own kin
I call thee to my side
Forest’s voice has grown so dim
Yet still you are my guide
Walk where shadows lay
Where warriors once did tread
Feel the strength of those before
The voices of the dead

With every step I seek the past
The life I used to know
Before the forest faded fast
Before the rivers slowed
What name was mine in days of old
When I walked free and bold?
Forefathers blood guide my hand
As stories once foretold

O spirits of the ancient blood
O voices in the night
You gather now around me close
To lend me all your might
For in this battle’s final cry
I stand to strike him down
And through your strength, I wield the blade
To take both throne and crown

I feel your whispers in my ear
Your power in my arm
You who watched o’er countless wars
Now shield me from all harm
The foe is fierce, the strike is near
But I fear not his face
For with your light I’ll bring him low
And end this dark embrace

Ashen Lord! Bearer of the flame
You who roamed the stars
Now guide me back to who I was
Before the world left scars
With ancestors at my command
The final blow I’ll land
To claim the path of warrior's way
And walk with them once more
Through forest deep and sacred door

For though the forest fades to dust
Though rivers cease to flow
The spirits stand with me in trust
To guide the strike, the blow
And as my hand does meet the steel
With all their strength combined
The enemy shall fall away
And freedom’s path I’ll find

Now, in this moment still and vast
With every breath I take
I know the souls of ancient past
Are here for every stake
And with this strike, this killing blow
The forest’s heart shall rise
For those who fought before me still
Are echoed in my eyes
