What makes someone write poetry?

I suppose for each individual it has some meaning in their lives.

What do members of DU think about writing poetry?

Just having fun with words?

Overcoming something?

Writing something to reflect?

Coping with mental problems?

Trying to express something to the world?

Certainly there are more aspects. I am interested in your thoughts so let's exchange ideas here.

Nice way to leave something for posterity, especially in times where pictures seem to be everything.

Personally, I enjoy words!  It gives me a creative freedom I don't feel with anything else. The imagery words create is like artwork for me. The interpretation of that work can be unique to the reader. On the other hand, words can be serious and say exactly what is meant. I find it a fun challenge to find words to describe the indescribable parts of myself.

Sometimes, usually unexpectedly, I start writing in my head, it's inspired by an emotion, or some combination of words I find interesting. I only write when something like this happens...and I never try to force myself to write when I don't feel like it.

To answer the original question, I suppose my reason for writing is reflection & playing with words 🤷☺️

I have to say I’m mostly the same. Historically, I would have waited for inspiration or an emotion.

It’s been interesting actually, taking part in the NoPoo thread. Writing daily over this time has actually been a really nice change because it’s giving, and allowing myself a bit of time to stop, sit and really tune into how I feel during the day. It’s become a bit of a journaling experience almost.

I guess my opinion on why I write has changed a fair bit over this time, just as a self observation.

The True Expression is Power: Power not to Harm But Power to Heal. These are the Words of a Poety Who Finds Light in the Midst of the Tunnel. When She or He Finds words to Express her Contention to Follow In (this world the) Lights; Because True CRAFTS Do Mend Soul, Broken Worlds Do Can be made Whole. With Words We Express The Troubled Time's in Joy They Speak to Renew the Minds. However of a Manner I've Speak Due Word. So that Life May be a Symphony Worth!

People Write for all Thing; Sort of Things, But at the end; They Just Wish to <> Touch and Be Heard. So Whether You Write Simply for Fun, or Expression of Mind; It is to Do an Act that Should be Appreciated Because the Person so Doing it Should Know they Worth the Care They Put into [Their]; Hence is it a Craft Most Memorable to them Who take IT THUS Seriously; With Fun or With Dedication, it is a Sense of Diction that Should Be Not Equated: Because Hearts Do Speak!

Poetry is self therapy. A creative vice that helps deal with life's strife. A healthier alternative to drugs and overindulgence of alcohol.

I hear short rhymes and limericks in my head a lot.
Usually I really only write big poems when a compulsions happens.

I enjoy the process of conveying opinion and information in a fashion  entertaining to its readers.

If done correctly, it's an exercise in creating art that actually communicates i.e. you know more of who I am given where I stand on an issue and or you gained some knowledge in the process you previously weren't aware of.

As opposed to eliciting reactions with associative triggers or exploitations i.e. using keywords and language that puts a burden of drawing conclusions about what was stated and who stated it solely onto you.
