Poetry Contest

Write a poem about what life would be like without DUP, the internet and electricity.
After the recent DUP outage, I was chatting with Rain about how dependent we have become on DUP for posting our poems and keeping in touch with each other. It wasn't that long ago when DUP did not exist and for that matter, the internet. Some of you are not that old, but it's only been about 15 years or so since the internet became what it is now. There was a net of some sort before, but it wasn't the world wide web it is now. and it was only about a hundred years ago that no one even had electricity. So think about those ideas and write a poem relating to what life would be like if we suddenly had no more DUP, no more internet and no more elcetricity.

It can be about any one of those or about all three. What would you do and how would you communicate and share your poetry?

Books, magazines, newspapers??? Could we go back to these ancient forms of communication if we had to? And if you tell me you would just text your poems to your friends, I'm gonna diqualify you! HA!!!!

THE SILENCE

I write these words on precious paper

As a poet, I am so poor

The inkwell is nearly dry

I add some old coffee and tea

Maybe it will last through this poetry

I am cold, there is no wood

Fully dressed, with gloves I write

Patriotic verses that will sell tonight

So I will have a few Forints to spend on wine

Go to the pub and spend some time

Get the gossip on the politics

Hope I can afford some food

Will put me in a better mood

For tomorrow comes another day

My rent is due

I cannot pay

My cough is better now that I am warm

I will soon depart for home

Where sweet dreams will shelter me

From the harsh reality.

Burning The Midnight Oil

'Twas during the early dawn of my teen-age years
on a small but lovely island paradise of mine
where I first saw the light of day;
that I'm going to take you on a journey
down on a rugged trail of memories
under sisyphusian conditions.

There I was studying late at night on a make-shift table
with only self-made gas lamps as my source of light.
I crafted them from empty coffee jars and the like
with mostly kerosene and sometimes oil as fuel,
and old cotton-shirts twisted to length serving as wick.

Imagine what you would look like after
you have been exposed to soot for hours...
Your nostrils would be black as coals
and you'll be nauseated due to kerosene smell;
sometimes my eyebrows would burn
just like the moths attracted to the flame.
Do you think it gets any better?

Nauseating feeling filled my sleepy head
for four years until I graduated...
My sisyphean task in pursuit of knowledge
was not in vain after all,
for I was on the top of the graduating class
with a college scholarship to boot.

Although I may have finally reached my goals,
my thirst for knowledge has never been quenched.
We are already in the Internet age where
social networking sites are a place to chat,
and the marriage of electronic gadgets rivals
the rate of divorces among the older and younger couples alike;
yet my beloved island paradise is still suffering
from frequent brown-outs and occasional loss of electric power.

I am just a small town boy with big dreams
hoping to fulfill my advocacy--to replace fossil fuels
which contribute to global warming
with solar, wind and other renewable energies;
not only they are environmentally friendly,
but also reliable and economical to operate under a long run.

Someday I would like to see the day
that the nights would be bright as day
and no poor souls just like me
would endure the harsh realities
of living without electricity--
This is my vision...

Please join me in my plea, I beg of you...
For the sake of our children and for generations to come,
do something to prevent global warming as it is real.
Send e-mails to lawmakers and make your voices heard;
fill the deep pockets of the do-nothing Congress,
until they burst and might finally act!

Pre-DUP was obliviousness (I know. Its not a word) to the words in me
More so ignorant to the potential of the words to spread and flap their wings

Post-DUP is a greivance of a family lost
Only carrying on by the newfound ability to transform words
Into freebirds
Into melodies
Into hands...

Yeah I missed this place. I was starting to worry it was closed for good

Why is the pub
the only building on my street
with power,
is this a message from God?
without the internet,
he's telling me
to find conversation at the bottom
of a bottle,
The hospital doesn't run
on generators, and
neither does the petrol
station
across the road
from my house
but the attendants
still hang out
in front of it,
smoking and
waiting like they know
some message
we don't

No where on my street
has electricity
but the pub has power,

what does that say about humanity?

Has everyone forgotten how much they missed DUP while it was down for four days? This will be a very easy contest to judge, as I only made it for one week. JJ

Fear of Flying

We are noisy little birds
secure in our nest
until we grow hungry
forcing our parents
to fly off
to care for us
the whole time they are gone
we complain
our stomachs are empty
we are cold
alone in the dark
then what joy when they return
filling our bellies
we are warm
no longer alone
forgetting our hardships
never realizing
we live forever on the edge
of being pushed from the nest
