were told that in the good-old-days wee coulda paid professional penitents to say our penances & profer indulgences to cover future penitations. (an earlier form of Pay-it-Forward) Sister Mary Jesus had no understanding to explain why 'that' was done-away with...she thought it was a'okay
Mafia was said to have a wide network of perma-black clad old widows to whom the hit-men could pay to expunge their deeds before the lord. The prayerwomen were most often the spouses of them who was wacked in some earlier time, & thus they were assured a comfortable wage for perpetuating & projecting their grievings.....twas a centuries old tradition, still surviving, though in 'smaller pockets' of practice.
