a fear of falling
positioned myself
where I thought the gap between the
train and the platform would be narrowest
escape I’ve ever had

Untitled (Sounds of the City)
Dew hangs above the blades of grass
Like some Chinese weather balloon
Sink into the hammock of my sleep
As my thoughts dream their dreams
Pick up my thoughts and some coffee
Put em into the passenger side
With no safety belt
Train on the tracks that pass through town
Clack their clackety clacks
As the light turns green
Pick up the rhythm the city lays down
Hear the beep beep of reverse
Delivery at the market
Siren picks up where delivery left off ...

Stay Away From The Tracks
A teenage girl somewhere anywhere was busy text messaging friends on her cell phone several months ago.
She was walking along a set of railroad tracks.
Although deaf since birth, she had frequently proclaimed that she could avoid danger more easily then hearing people.
She was much more sensitive to vibrations, especially from approaching trains and those roaring train whistles.
She was wrong.
She was mangled beyond recognition.
They were able to identify the body, since her i-phone survived the collision.

mind the gap
problem with boarding
is the gap between
the platform and the train
the step up or fall down
thing is about my legs and my legs are
in thrall to my brain

Art, Decay, Seeing in Perspective
I ride subways often
Most stations are acceptable
Then there’s the L Train
Union Square
14th Street
Crimes against cleanliness
Old tile walls
They will never be repaired
Disgraceful
Yet …
There’s beauty too
A wall so tired and beyond salvation
An artist like myself captures it
Presents it for your viewing pleasure

as for rush hour
catching a train is like catching a cold, which you probably will, since the train is usually packed with the coughing and the sweating and the generally ill

can’t explain it
everyone loves a steam train
maybe they’re not good for the planet, what with all that coal, but they warm
my soul, I can’t explain it

mind the gap
the announcer says mind the
gap between the train and the platform and I do
I mind it very much
as I’m scared I won’t make it and there’s always the danger
of a very major
mishap ..

train ride
cross-country journey on the tracks
[No. 8 from The Children’s Collection]
“Neither a wise man nor a brave man lies down on the tracks of
history to wait for the train of the future to run over him.”
—Dwight D. Eisenhower

chu-ku-tu-ku / tu-ku-tu-ku

round the mountainside the engine comes,
hi-hat cymbals lighting up the drums;
at the bog walk tunnel she dissolves;
at the latter end she re-evolves.

since we’re all calling life a journey these days ..
travel by train has always seemed
to me the best way of writing about life, the monotonous journeys, the
frequent delays, the cancellations, leading to unexpected stays in hurriedly booked hotels in those never
intended destinations; but as well, there’s always those who will help one up and down from the train when they
see the struggle it entails, and it’s for them I intend to never again go off, as one might put it, he said, the rails ..
