The Silence
Then there was peace…
A lull in the shelling of the battleground
and there was a silence so profound.
The corpses had laid in pools of blood, drowned,
the bleeding of their bodies dry and the cold had their corpses embalmed.
There was heartening quietude in their stillness,
only in the distance was there a resonance of their shrillness.
Their lips were stiffly bound,
not a daystar to soften them around.
Erectly stood from a shattered barn was tall chimneypiece,
smokeless, in the still air itself now had peace. ...
