I Come By It Naturally
We always blamed Daddy for me wanderin’ feet
ramblin’ around and springtime retreat
the places I’ve lived and always I’m seekin’
a new place to go on the rest of me spree…
We’ve come to think lately we might be unfair
just to lay blame on Daddy’s career
for Grandpa John Coulter, he went over there
deserted his Mary and daughters, the pair…
John had a profession, for he was in pharmacy
and so he started a nice little family
how do I say this, John nipped on his remedy
when his wife didn’t like it, he went away…
And where did you go, Mr. Coulter, my ancestor
back in the thirties you disappeared
well, off to Australia, somewhere down under
so all of me life I’ve been known to wonder…
I’m left wonderin’ why, when I smell eucalyptus
me ramblin’ feet start trekkin’ in haste
I’ve always been happy in the forests out west
the groves are so thick, the aromas so fresh…
And it’s not only that, but those movies I loved
set me to wonderin’ of where I belong
Mad Max is me favorite, in his world I got lost
along side of Mel Gibson, with all of his lot…
While I’d never presume on me friends on G. P.
I’ve had a dream and I’d love to see
if you know the Coulter’s, and if they drop by
just tell ‘um I’m crickey and I said g’day.

Strange, but true story - we have Carlene to thank for me even posting it, ha-ha. I've always thought It'd be grand if I actually have family in Australia! Ready or not, here I come, lol!
Thanks so much - I always appreciate your feedback, my friend. :-)

:) Oh, I just saw this, now, Mary Ann. You could very well have family in Australia. It would be grand, as you say! I'm sure my family has skeletons in the closet, somewhere, too! lol
If you haven't already you could Google 'Coulter Genealogy' & go from there. You never know!
Now to go comment on your poem, my friend!

A true story, my friend... Must have been a real terrible family scandal at the time! Of course I never met my mother's father - all these years he's been he's like a ghost or a legend. Thanks so much, Scribbler - so glad you enjoyed it!!

Yes, you're so right to point that out, Flowergirl! I feel quite comfortable exposing ancestors for all to see, lol! Thank you, my friend, for making me feel so at home. Warm smiles, Mary Ann

I am a real fan of the land down under... may never make it that far from home but I've always felt a warm sense of kinship with every Aussie I've ever met. Very real people - I'm sure you know what I mean! Thanks again, Carlene. Peace and love, Mary Ann :-)

Very enjoyable composition!
My favorite stanza:
"I’m left wonderin’ why, when I smell eucalyptus
me ramblin’ feet start trekkin’ in haste
I’ve always been happy in the forests out west
the groves are so thick, the aromas so fresh…"

Thank you so much for reading and commenting, Jazzmanor... sorry to be slow replying, perhaps just a touch of spring fever at work. Your feedback is very much appreciated. Cheers, Mary Ann :-)

Clever stuff and an easy read. I used to work for a Coulter as an export manager. In his latter years he used to lick the inside of walnut shells and discard the nuts.
