Sedimentary
Dry me out and fold me from bloom to bud to seed.
Slip me in the earth's bone-dry womb
and never moisten my soils again
because the life that's grown in and around me
has squashed the fearless, foolhardy dreamer.
Damned by my own vitality destined only
to wither first as stretching leather
then suffer the perishing of my own will and nerve.
Dry me out and fold me from bloom to bud to seed
for every fibre that clings to me holds the weight
of a thousand razor-blades that cut deeper when I move
when I bleed.
they bathe their children
beneath the mute wolf
and scatter their food
to absorb its reflection
the night's rays bounce
off the deluge of insanity
and the mirror-moon
has fooled them all
the beakless cuttlefish
home
in the black abyss
smiling as it swims away
with its silver crescent grin
