Life Moves On

I remember a day
So very long ago
When I'd play in the garden
Chasing ladybugs in summer

There was beauty in the simplicity
The sunny days of 2000-something
When age was a single number
And I was still in one piece

This world will change you
It'll darken your innocent soul
Draining your heart
As things fall apart
We'd all love to stay in those good old days
But life moves on

Do you remember
So very long ago
When we could play make-believe
Our imagination limitless

It's funny how creative we were
Before life shuts us down
We could dream up such brilliance
Yet now, I dream no more

This world will change you
It'll narrow your perspective
The colours start greying
The joy starts decaying
We'd love to pretend we're heroes again
But life moves on

Time marches on
The way it always has
Time marches on
As the present turned to past

This world will change you
It'll distort time around you
The future turns shorter
The past will grow hazy
We'd love to be able to travel through time
But life moves on

Author's Note
I mourn the innocence of childhood. When age was a one-digit number and stress was a non-entity. Imagination was limitless, joy was genuine. A time you'd go outside with your friends and play make-believe. Back when I felt like a normal human being. Time has changed me. I'm not what anybody wants me to be. I miss being carefree. I forget what it felt like to not carry any of the weight I carry now upon my shoulders. This world changes you. It breaks you. It tears away everything. It'll take a child so happy and turn him into a cynic. There's nothing we can do to stop the army of hours coming to capture our spirit, because time marches on, no matter how hard you fight it.

What is left of that child? All that remains is shattered.
