Festive Solitude
The holidays were quiet
how it all changed
through the years
empty seats at the dinner table
less laughter
So much emphasis
on one day
And this year
as schedules
and timing dictated
I spent it alone
and survived
But I would be lying
if I said I didn't miss the company
Or those smells of the feast
I never thought as I got older
that connection would be farther away
but it is
and I hope that when it finally happens
it will be about quality
and I can be seen by admiring eyes
how it all changed
through the years
empty seats at the dinner table
less laughter
So much emphasis
on one day
And this year
as schedules
and timing dictated
I spent it alone
and survived
But I would be lying
if I said I didn't miss the company
Or those smells of the feast
I never thought as I got older
that connection would be farther away
but it is
and I hope that when it finally happens
it will be about quality
and I can be seen by admiring eyes
