Pitiful Souls

Pitiful souls living off crumbs,
hardly surviving alone,
mice digging from bedrock
sifting through debris for daily bread.

Pitiful souls joined in a nest of matrimony
in the name of stability and unity,
sharing scraps,
drawing near to fatality,
in a miserable race against time.

Pitiful souls chasing after copulation,
mindlessly delivering innocent lives
cradled at chaos’ doorstep,
lost embryos left to wander.

Pitiful souls giving birth
to more pitiful souls,
enduring wars,
ruthlessly stomped on
by the world’s harshness.

Pitiful souls breathing in despair,
watching their offspring
grow up feeling undesirable,
raised under a rootless,
ramshackle roof.
