The Dance of Numbness

I’ve sat with pain, a guest for so long,
Written countless lines, my heart’s old song.
Opened once, now closed again,
Numbness, my comfort, my familiar friend.
The hurt no longer cuts, it simply stays,
An old companion through endless days.
The song repeats, echoes loud,
Comfortably numb, beneath the shroud.
I learned to dance with pain, embrace her tight,
But tonight, she clings with all her might.
Squeezing my heart, draining me dry,
How much more until I fly?
I thought I was ready, thought I’d be free,
But pain has other plans for me.
I dance with her; I know her well,
She’s my shadow, my quiet hell.
Is my soul not enough to set me free,
From this endless grip, this painful plea?
Now numb, just a builder, a poet,
Trapped in a cage, though few may know it.
No one holds the key, no one sees,
The poet lost in a prison of pleas.
Comfortably numb, I linger, I stay,
Wondering when pain will fade away.
