My Gazelle

My lovely Gazelle
They kept you from me.
Our embrace dispelled
Desertion a habit to be.

My love, be kind.
She cried, “Oh No.”
Remember our passion,
My wild wild Doe?

“My dear, those in love,
Don't mind being abhorred.”
Mind my tears, I begged.
“A liar,” she implored.

My deer, by your grace,
How fair you are to see.
I wonder who gave you
The right to kill me.

My heart will never
Love anyone except thee.
They taught you neglect
And it overwhelmed me.

My heart melted in love
Of the fair with red lips.
My tears rushed from
My eyes like blood spilt.

My life I had bid
Farewell as they
Left me to question
If it’s the best way.

My friend, I was a lover
Of women's breasts.
Of branches that swayed
And ladies at their best.

My love of silky hair
Over a rosy cheek.
Have mercy on a heart
Lost for you to seek.

My grace emerges
Like the bright Moon.
Full of praise and
Fragrance in it’s bloom.

My love please remove
Your lover’s veil.
For love is always
Sovereign to no avail.

My heart tortured when
She cried out loud,
“Do you want to die?”
I said, “I am bound.”

My death I’m content to see
However I did not except
For you to leave me.
That I will not accept.

Author's Note
This is a translation of an old poem (by Amin Al-Jundi 1766-1840) describing a spat between two lovers. It starts out by the poet calling out for his lover. He describes her as a 'gazelle'. The description of a woman as a 'gazelle,' 'deer' or a 'doe' was an old tradition of ancient poets. He wants to be close to her but she is rejecting him and she wants to desert him. He tells her how he feels about her but she calls him a 'liar'. He explains his condition and what she makes him feel. He also confesses he was a womanizer but when he saw her it made him question his ways.
