your choices are your destiny

you can't soar in a windless sky,
          or summit-seek on smooth rocks;
                    your choices are your destiny,
                              your vices your in-trade stocks.
                                        you can't see forward looking back,
                                                  or make advance retreating,
                                                            the virtues of life's almanac
                                                                      reality defeating.

                                                                                there is no living in the grave,
                                                                      nor death in paradise ground;
                                                            truths oft revealed to heroes brave
                                                  are scarce among the wise found.
                                        the honest man lives by his truth,
                              or dies to save his honour;
                    the young finds courage in his youth,
          the old in sage hosanna.

the fool comfort in promises
          find, beggars ride lame horses;
                    the wicked meets his nemesis,
                              the foe his rival forces.
                                        no harvest yields from hoarding seeds,
                                                  nor famine from gift-giving;
                                                            no pray’r prayed when a bent knee bleeds
                                                                      a clot makes of life’s living.
