Beyond the Mirror

“Beyond the Mirror”

I see it leaving your eyes…
To weep would serve me not.
As all things, as everything, dies…
As I lie here in this spot,
The sun seen on the threshold
Of tomorrow, shimmering with gold.

What haunts me is that you are not here
As the stars disappear.
I am so silent in my desertion—
I see you in my reflection
And for a moment, I felt your company.
I thought you might summon me
From beyond the veilèd glass,
But no voice, your voice never called
To pierce the shadows of the vault
And I sleep without slumber, alas
In the silence that awaits thee,
Should you choose to join me.

I do not know what years outspread;
What long seasons lie ahead.
I know not if the shadow is forever,
And who among men will remember
For as long as the seasons go by
The names of those who die.
I remain bound to this place,
To watch as tears fall down your face,
With upon my lips an eternal farewell,
Until you sleep as well
Beyond the mirror and beyond sleep.
