Unknown is scary

We live
We die
We're like butterflies
Cocooned and protected for most of our lives

Until one day adulthood sets us free
Becoming of age sounds like a dream
Being independent, being able to do
Whatever you want
Is what all of us imagined

We never suspected the world would be one big cage
"You can be whoever you want" is what adults used to tell us
And we believed them so blindly because we weren't aware they were lying

The world used to seem so big and bright
Now it's just dull and empty
Black, grey, and white
Grayscale
Grayscale is all we see with the adult gleam shining in our eyes

"Dream big! You can do anything!"
Those words were only traps in disguise
Just empty promises

If you knew back then what you know now
how do you think your life would have started?
With curious eyes and excited smiles?
Or with hesitant steps and cautious glances?

I bet you would be a lot different
And way more scared
Because the world is full of unknown things and that's scary as hell

Author's Note
Unknown things are often times the most exciting, but I wanted to reflect on what it feels like to become an adult and stop seeing the world from a child's perspective
