Rather than resigning, if the claims were true, I would have challenged everyone entering the contest to write about what douchebag behaviour the chairman was guilty of.

To be fair, the chairman in that case wasn't accused of raping children. It's just that the quote inspired the poem, which was based on things I've been reading for a while now about the French literary establishment's reckoning with abusers in its midst.
The most egregious case is of the novelist and memoirist Gabriel Matzneff, now in his 80s, who sexually abused a teenage girl. She recently released a book about her experiences. But he was also writing about, for example, having sex with prepubescent boys while on tours of Asian countries. Writing about it in books that were sold in shops and discussed on television in France. Not sold to anyone with any taste, of course, but very popular among the intelligentsia.
