It Can't Be Nothing
Research and I
Are old friends
We go back
Many, many years
I absolutely love
Poking around
In things
Really digging deep
In sometimes dull
Or even pointless ones
But, I confess that
Looking into songs
And finding their
Hidden meanings
Is my favorite
Thing of all.
Sometimes, my
Research proves
To be a
little disappointing
Such was the case
When I found out
For myself that
The iconic song
Of the 60's
"The Sounds
Of Silence" by
Paul Simon was
Despite it's loose ties
To the Vietnam War,
written
About absolutely
Nothing
Would someone
Tell me pretty please
How that could be?
Isn't that just
A major
Kick in the pants?
It sure seems
Like that
To me.

Well, you're very welcome. Thank you for your kind comment. BTW, you might want to check out Bob Dylan's song, "Desolation Row" while you're researching that too. It's one of my all-time favorite songs. Believe it or not, it's another song that has no meaning and was reportedly written why he was on an acid trip. The acid thing was nothing more than a viscous rumor. The lyrics are filled with lines that I had been sure really meant something, however I discovered that they don't. Dylan is quoted to have said the song isn't about anything. Go figure!

You're so welcome. Teaching you was a real delight! Have a wonderful day, my dear poet! But wait! Could you stand just one more lecture? Remember that totally mesmerizing song also popular in the day, called "A Whiter Shade Of Pale?" I didn't know anyone who didn't just love it.
I thought it was Procol Harem's best song untill I sought out it's meaning. I was so disappointed to hear that it was mainly written about a drunken sex act forceably performed on a woman in a bar's public restroom. I was heart broken that a song with so many great lines and pretty music could be about that. I'm sure the Queen of England never suspected it when the band played the song for her!

To know that "the words of the prophets were written on the subway walls, and tenement halls" was only included because it sounded good that way is heartbreaking. I actually knew this. I just tried to pretend it wasn't so.

You too? Well, it isn't written in stone anywhere that a song, however disappointing, has to mean anything. That's life, I guess you could say.

I think many writings come from the subconscious.
As he has said, "everything looks worse in black and white"

And so I shall! I always tell people that I love my name, then add that I'm really very attached to it...lol!

Thank you so much. I really enjoyed what you had to say. I would love to check out that YouTube video but I'm afraid the link isn't working. Could you check it out for me?
