TELLING THE STORY

Inside every story
there�s another story.

We create stories
to tell ourselves
�it all makes sense�,
a collection of events
came together and now
this is the tale they tell,
recreating a narrative
to convince the self
all is well,
this is what happened,
this is what I recall.
Details are changed
as an acceptable
progression is arranged
to fit in with
everything else.

So finding the
place for a
story to begin
when what
went before
reveals what
lies within
is the challenge.

Where does a story start,
how can you only tell a part
without revealing how
it came about?

Author's Note

This poem was partly inspired by a conversation I had with my Mum about a story from when I was very young, what I remembered was not what happened, I had merged two different days into one. I had changed the story so that things would make sense and be acceptable to the little me.

So True Morgan, well expressed, My Mother will tell me one then go into another story then another one, etc and I forget what she was telling me about in the first place haha 🌹

Thanks Pete, yes I love the way the oldies (and not so old) start telling you something which triggers off a memory and off they go into another story.
