mockingbird

Killing a mockingbird serves no purpose, and
therefore is an act of unnecessary cruelty.

no mock make of the mockingbird
no muck make of his mettle
his repertoire the hearts have stirred
of men where’er they settle
a song for every season throats
the air both night and noonday
its summer bugles far remote
from winter’s opportune-day

to kill a mockingbird is sin
for heaven hath no reason
to rape the harmless violin
that breathes no threat of treason
defend his habitat he will
when threatened by intruders
but harmless are his beak and quill
against human invaders

the mocking-male-bird takes a wife
and serenades none other
monogamy his pledge for life
come hell or freezing weather
i hunger for his catalogue
to swell my lean inventory
if but my final epilogue
may be a song of the gentry

The phrase "it's a sin to kill a mockingbird" refers to the intentional and pointless destruction of a creature that does no harm. The mockingbird is a songbird, not a pest; moreover, it is not a game bird. Killing a mockingbird serves no purpose, and therefore is an act of unnecessary cruelty.
